I have Premiere Elements 9 and can't get the video clips to play. It is just black but can hear the audio fine. When I click on the preview window the video pauses and I get a still image of that point in time. If I preview from the clip section it is blank but also with audio. I have updated my drivers etc and it worked briefly but as soon as I exited the programme and came back in it had stopped working again.
This programme is driving me nuts...Please, how can I get it working?
What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
Have you ensured that any audio files are in the form of WAV files?
When you started your Premiere Elements project, which project settings did you select? If you've selected the correct project settings for your video there will be NO red lines above your clips when you add them to your timeline. Is this the case with your project?
Camcorder is a Panasonic SDR-H85. The format it puts it in is mpeg 2 and the resolution is 768x576.
Other file formats have exactly the same problem. I have tried converting the camcorder files into other formats eg. avi but that doesn't help.
The audio is coming through fine but would that format affect the video?
I use the default settings that start with the programme, but I've tried changing playback settings etc but nothing has worked. There are no red lines above the clips, the image shows fine in the media part and usually on the timeline but they don't play (are blank) when they open in the preview or playback panes.
This camcorder shoots in a very strange format: 704x480 AVC.
I don't know what to recommend for you. I've never seen that resolution before, and it certainly doesn't match any of the standard presets Premiere Elements has.
It's possible you can edit it in Premiere Elements -- but only if your computer is powerful enough to make up for the strange incompatibilities of this non-standard format.
Maybe somebody who's worked with this camcorder has some suggestions for you. But there's no solution within the program that I know of. You may want to look into another video editing program. If the camcorder came with its own, that would be your best choice.
Sorry. I'm not sure why Panasonic chose to build a camcorder with such non-standard specs.
It isn't just this camera, I have tried media from other camera's or sources and they have the same problem too.
I've just realised that the resolution I gave is what Media Player gives in the property details. PE gives 720x576.
I've also just installed this on my laptop and using exactly the same media files is working, although slowly as my laptop specs aren't as good as my PC. Could it be a graphics card thing as they are running different cards - one is NVIDIA (PC) and the other is ATI (laptop).
I'm also trying a reinstall on my PC incase it didn't install properly the first 2 times! Haha.
The lack of red line above the clip shows you have the correct project setting (PAL-DV). Your choice of graphic card is not really an issue but the drivers are. Ensure you have the latest version (check the nvidia site, don't rely on Windows Update to give you the latest version). Also ensure you have the latest version of QuickTime 7.7.1.

Yeah have the latest NVIDIA drivers from their site, and also the latest Quicktime. All the system requirements are met and everything that I can think of is up to date.
Yeah I know, it's driving me BONKERS so all I can do now is laugh to myself (then go cry in the corner! Jokes!)
The reinstall didn't work either.
Why would it work on my laptop with crappier specs but not on my PC other than the fact that it's a different graphics card? Is there a known issue between this programme and NVIDIA graphics cards?
Yup, everything is already up to date, had already installed 9.01 and defrag was done yesterday. So I deleted the BadDriver.txt file did a disc clean up, rebooted and put Norton into silent mode to stop it running in the background but none of it made a difference. Laptop also has Norton running and doesn't seem to be a problem.
The only things that are obviously different between the laptop and the PC that I can think of are the graphics card and screen resolution (and general specs too of course).
Would be great if someone had a working solution...looking around the internet, seems like a few other people have had similar problems - with no fix yet either.
I don't want to use the programme that came with the camcorder cause it is crap, and I don't want to have to pay for another programme when already forked out heaps for this one. If I have to I'll resort to using Windows Movie Maker as that has no problems but pretty limited in it's functions. SO PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!

Can there be other variables? Of course there can, but the article offers solutions to the vast majority of issues.
With a PC, there are inherently many variables, that can cause problems, from hardware, to other software running. Each, the hardware and the other software, can lead to problems. That is why, when I edit Video, I turn OFF everything, that is not totally necessary. I also do NOT have any Internet presence, nor do I check e-mail, when editing. My workstation is basically a video-editing machine, though my laptop does many thing for me - just not while I am editing. In that article is a link to Clean, Lean, Mean Editing Machine. I adhere to those general tenants.
I already cut half the stuff out of msconfig but I like to keep some running cause they inevitably play up if I fiddle too much. I'm also a firm believer that I shouldn't need to turn everything off as you say just to run one programme. If that was the case then I might as well go out and buy a computer for every programme that I want to run.
I'm definitely no expert but If it was running poorly or slowly etc then I'd probably put it down to a clash with something else, but for me, with it being just this one graphics issue then I really think it's gotta be something to do with the graphics card or something along those lines.
After I had updated my graphics card with the latest update it worked fine, but then went back to exactly the same problem as soon as I closed it off (after about 10 mins). So it can work with other things running.
Seems odd that it will work fine but then as soon as I close the programme it goes back to it's old tricks...as if it doesn't recognise the thing that it needs to make it work.
I have the same problem as you. It's driving me crazy. I thought I might be doing something wrong so I brought the instruction book for $54 and that hasn't helped either. I've tried importing video from our old video camera, my new Canon DLSR, old video footage on DVD and nothing works. It all plays on the computer but not once I import it into Premier Elements 9. I hope someone has a solution for us soon.
I again installed the latest graphics driver from Nvidia when it was released last week and the programme worked until I restarted the computer, then the same old problem again. Is there something in Elements which needs to be running at startup that I have perhaps turned off?
