Adobe Community: When tethered to LR3 will a Canon 30D also capture to the CF card ?*

Thank you very much for that astute reply, without which, I would never realized that the readers of my posting - yourself included - do not possess the knowledge I seek.

Perhaps you could point me in the direction of those who know the answers as I was under the impression that this was an official Adobe forum and a positive reply would be forthcoming from the experts who designed Lightroom. If I want "dont know" answers all I have to do is go down to the pub any night !

This is likely a Canon question and not a Lightroom question. You may have better luck in a Canon Forum. I can tell you that on a 40D it goes both places-the hard drive and the CF Card.

Please note that this is a User to User forum, i.e. users ask questions, and other users post the answer (if they know).

FWIW, I would expect that answer to to your question is "yes".....I have a 40D and a 5DII and both will write to the card as well as to the computer when tethering. However, I don't have a 30D so I can't be definitive. Do you have a 30D? If so, why not simply try it and let us know?

Yes, but not reliable. I have the 30D. During the shoot, some of the images are saved in the camera CF but some are not. I don't know why. But this happen to me every session.

Thanks. I've tried using the 30D and whilst it functions OK on the PC it wont record on CF.

After studying dozens of forums and tutorials the general opinion is that practically any Canon will record to CF so I want to find out if its my system, my camera, or whatever thats at fault. So far I have only come across one 30D owner (hsbn) using the method I want to use.

I have a vague feeling that the Canon EOS Utility may get in the way (isn't there a Preference in EOS Utility which applies to this function?)...do you have it installed? If so, you could try uninstalling it and then try tethering again.

I normally don't install the Canon utilities, but I can have a play later to see if I can recreate that problem.

Try using the Canon EOS Utility 'Remote Connection.' If you have the lateset software and camera firmware version and the EOS Utility doesn't allow CF capture, then I guess you have your answer – It's not a LR issue. If you have a 'Commuincations Settings' in the camera's menu, you could try changing it and see if that makes a difference. Otherwise.....maybe it's a good excuse to buy another camera body for tethered shooting .

Dont need excuses to buy gear - just need more money !

I'll try the EOS and Coms suggestions and also see if uninstalling EOS utility helps.

UPDATE

A) Tried Eos Utility using 30D with firmware 1.0.6, that works OK with CF and PC recording but if I switch off or disconnect I lose the control panel and or window. Task manager shows it as running but I cant get back to to the program without rebooting. Hence my main reason for wanting to use LR.

B) Removed Eos Utility completely, ran LR with the 30D and still had the CF problems.

C) Borrowed a 20D with 2.0.3 firmware ran LR and that combination worked OK and gave CF and PC recordings

D) Next test will be to re install Eos and try running both cameras through LR.

THOUGHT......Will 30D accept 2.0.3 firmware ????????

Seems strange that an old camera will work better than a new one, but thats progress I believe. When this prob is sorted Im going to have to post another question about file naming and getting the PC and CF numbers to synchronise.

There are options in the EOS Utility Preferences for 'Save also on the camera's memory card' and 'Auto Power Off' disable to prevent losing your camera's USB connection. These only work when the EOS Utility is doing the tethered image capture. My Canon 600D isn't supported yet in LR for tethering, so don't feel so bad. I just tried a procedure at the below link using LR's 'Auto Import' function. It works well once you have everything setup properly.

Scroll down to the section titled 'How to shoot with EOS Utility and LR' for details. The nice part about this is you have the option to review and set most of your camera's controls onscreen. You can also use 'Live Preview' mode available on the newer DSLRs like the Canon 600D. It would be nice if Adobe could incorporate live view and at least some camera controls for the Canon and Nikon DSLRs already supported for tethered capture. For now this procedure is a viable solution.

Thanks. I'll look at that tomorrow.Just had a massive stroke of luck. An old friend just dropped by unexpectedly and brought with him a friend who happened to be a PROGRAMMER !!

He found a .bat file and entered it for me. The result is that both the 20D and 30D will work with EOS and open up in a large image straightaway, Because its EOS they also copy to the CF card and the beauty is ........the files on the PC retain the Canon file numbers.

He did'nt have time to sort out the LR problems but he is going to write me a simple programme without frills that will always display the last frame shot in full screen on a viwer of my choice , retaining the camera file numbers and downloading a copy to a pc folder.

Running out of time so I will update my results tomorrow

OK, good to hear. You say, "the files on the PC retain the Canon file numbers." This is set using the EOS Utility Preferences 'File Name' tab. If you want the filename to match what's on the CF card make sure it is set to 'Do not modify (Download Images).'

That option did'nt work for me until I did the uninstall and reinstall of EOS so I obviously had a corrupt file first time round.

Re the link you mentioned , I wont be able to try that set up yet as john the programmer placed the bat file in my tethered folder and so I cant have a totally empty folder until I can contact him to move the bat file, it has to be done with run commands and thats not in my repertoire
