Can you help me retouching hair?

I've got a problem and I can't seem to get it right, I'm hoping you wizards can help me

 

We did a shoot and they now want a blonde woman to be a brunette, a bit mad I know but that's what the client wants. Now Cutting the hair out and using refine edges just doesn't get me a good mask (using CS 5 on a mac here). See the images attached.

 

Once done I'm getting close with the hair but I still don't think it's natural - but as you can see I have feathered edges on the dark hair and I need to get them unfeathered and looking good.

 

Can anyone help me or give me any tips on what to do?

    You may have to manually create a Mask and also decontaminate both hair and background.

    Could you post a higher res (section of the) image?

    And are you doing retouching in CMYK instead of the original RGB?

    If so: Bad idea, in my opinion.

    I did create the mask using a brush and then refine edges but still get the feathered effect - and yeah CMYK but could do it in RGB. The issue is the correct election / mask which is very difficult.

     

    I think on here it downsamples the image anyway? Could I email t to you to take a look for any advice?

    It downsamples the image displayed in the thread, but if one clicks on that one can get a bigger image – not sure what maximal dimensions/size, though.

    I'm not going to even try it at that res.  I have a feeling the limit is governed by file size rather than pixels.

    It would appear that image has already be edited in a somewhat unfortunate manner.

    yeah I had another layer on hair on top of that so that's not on the original.

     

    Anyway, I just can't see how it can be done looking natural. The fact that it's so blonde coming over a white top with her skin showing through means it could take days and days.

     

    What do you think?

    I think it is a task where automatic selection may be of limited help and a lo tot manual work may have to be put into it – but hardly days and days.

    And like I hinted at in post 1 it might be helpful to manually remove the background in the foreground and vice versa.
