Merge multiple PDF forms into one file with unique field names

Hello,

I have several PDF form files that need to be merged into a single PDF document. Given how they are currently organized, creating a portfolio is not an acceptible solution. Unfortunately, when these files were originally created, they were assigned random field names (e.g., "Text3). When I try to combine the files together, as a user goes through and enters data it shows up randomly on other fields on the form (to be expected). Is there a way to combine multiple PDF forms into one file with unique field names then go back through and update fields like "Name" that appear multiple times?

You can flatten all the fields before merging the files. Of course, then
you won't be able to edit them anymore...

The resulting form still would still need to be editable.

Then you'll have to edit the names of the fields before merging the files,
which is not an easy task.
Basically, you can either do it manually, or with a script, but the latter
will remove any formatting, validation or calculation scripts that are
associated with the fields.

A script sounds great, where would I begin? Is there a way to add a leading string to each field name ("Text3" could become "Form1_Text3")?
