LR4: what makes LR consider a file being changed externally?

I wonder how I can make LR4 recognize that a file has been changed externally (e.g. by GeoSetter). I am talking about hundreds of old images already imported into LR, that I want to geotag retroactively.

 

LR wouldn't show the 'Metadata changed externally icon" after I added and saved GPS data with GeoSetter. I need to select all relevant thumbnails in LR4 and do a Metadata->Read from File .

 

I tried to change the file date, add some additional data such as keywords during geosetting but with no success.

 

Which attributes are taken into account by LR to consider a file's metadata being changed externally?

 

Any hints and suggestions are highly appreciated.

    I faced similar issue and I think that LR4 just needs some time to discover the changes. Do you have your photos in DNG?

    I have DNG as well as lots of JPG and some CR2, the issue is with all file types. However I didn't notice any status change in LR4 within say 10 minutes. Not sure if it would help to have LR running for hours, I've never tried that. Do you thing that could help?
