Moved files to new hard drive, where is my catalogue?

Hello,

I outgrew  my old harddrives and so moved them via Macs DiskUtility.  Of course, LR 4 doesn't know where they are.  I thought it would be a matter of pointing the old catalogue to the new hard drive, but that does not appear to be the case.  Do I need to start from scratch and build a brand new catalogue?

Thanks for your help.

Dave

    You misunderstood the instructions.

When you move your photos to a different drive you have to re-connect Lr with the photos - you don't point the catalog to the new hard drive.

The catalog can remain where it was, since catalog and photos do not have to be on the same drive.

    Here's the instructions:

Organize all your photos in one (1) parent folder. Do this in Lr so that Lr "Knows" what is happening.

Close Lr and in Win Explorer/Mac Finder move this parent folder (with all sub-folders and photos) to the new drive. IMPORTANT: At this point do NOT change folder names or the folder structure. Except for the move to the new drive everything has to remain as it was when you last closed Lr.

Open Lr and you will see questions marks besides all folders in the folders panel.

Right-click the parent folder that you created earlier and select <Update folder location> or <Find missing folder>; navigate to the location on the new drive and click on it.

That's it. Lr will find all the sub-folders and photos on its own, provided you haven't changed folder names or folder structure.

Evaluate where you veered off from these instructions and try to fix the problem. Hopefully you won't have to build a brand new catalog because that means that you loose everything you did to your photos - unless you saved to xmp (and even then, collections, virtual copies, stacking will be lost).

PS: If you haven't put your photos in one parent folder, you have to right-click each folder and do <Update folder location> / <Find missing folder> for each folder separately

You wrote: "LR4 doubled the folder names of each folder."

Can you please describe what you are seeing exactly? Are the folders that appear twice on the same drive, or is one on the new and one on the old drive?

A screen shot would be helpful.

Also, do the folders that appear twice have the same images - same number of images?

Normally this does not happen. Have you re-imported you rimages at one point?

You also wrote: "  ...slower to load than before." What type is your new drive? USB?
