Exporting JPG

Does anyone know if there is a way to eliminate the extra space when you export a file as a jpeg? for example.....I have a document that i use for a business card template and it is 3.5" wide.  When I have an image that I want to use as the background it may be 4" or 5" wide so I create a "clipping mask" to eliminate the extra part of the image.  When I export as a PDF the file is fine, but when I export as a JPG there is white space around the art, and i have to take it into Photoshop to crop it out.  Is there a way to not have the white space?  Hopefully I explained it correctly.  I am using CS5.5 on a PC.

If you are exporting to JPG and desire a hi-res version, select the option at the bottom of the export dialog to Use Artboards. If you desire a low-res version, use the Save for Web and Devices menu command.

If you use the Artboards option, there is no need to create the clipping mask.

    Take care, Mike
