copying images with import

i store all my raw images on a hard drive before importing into lr4. Do I have to let lr copy all the images as part of the import process? I don't see any way to not copy images when importing.

this really slows the import process when using 100's of raw nikon images.

can I delete the copies that lr makes

I guess that the catalog files are independent of the copy files since I use the location of my original raw files.

At the top of the Import Dialog, select Add rather than Copy. This will add them in place where they are.
