Paste function NOT working in Dreamweaver CS5.5

Feb 9, 2012 1:54 PM

Tags: #and #cs5 #dreamweaver #paste #in #place #copy

I am trying to copy/paste in Dreamweaver, and the paste function is no longer working.  It used to work and then suddenly just stopped; I don't know if I did something to inactivate it or what happened.

I read that taking off "enable related files" but that didn't work either.

Can anyone help?
Thanks

    What OS?
    What happens when you try to paste?

    Is it just the shortcut or the edit->paste as well?

    Shut down DW and any other apps.  Re-start your computer. Try again....

    From which app(s) and what exactly are you trying to copy & paste into HTML?

    I am having the same problem in DW CS5/OSX 10.6.8. Started today, worked fine yesterday. Only change to system: There was an automatic firefox update that installed. I have run without firefox installed and going back 1 and 2 versions with no change.

    Copy and paste still works in the properties panel. In the document pane in both design and code, paste(short cut, edit or contextual menu) do not work but the highlight and drag (move and option drag to copy) method still does but must be within the same document.

    I can paste this info outside of DW, and when paste special is available in the contextual menu it works. this is not available in code view.

    Have restarted and even full shut down MANY times. I have trashed all the preferences I could find that have been modified since yesterday. (and no I don't have time machine set up to go backwards)

    For Nancy O.

    I have added to this issue with more information regarding pasting not working anymore in DW. Any other solutions than restarting/shut down? Its not changing the situation. Removing prefernces and restarting, no change. It seems that the clipboard is not accessible in the document window unless paste sepcial is being used.

    Same problem here. Windows 7, DW CS5.5.

    Keyboard shortcuts for copy/cut/paste function sporadically. I thought I was going crazy, but even pressing ctrl-x then pressing ctrl-v immediately afterwards results in nothing being pasted.

    When paste does work, it trims all leading whitespace. If I copy a block of text, all spaces/line breaks that were before the first letter or number are not retained when I paste.

    I'm used to DW being slow and buggy, but this might be the nail in the coffin. Custom keyboard shortcuts sometimes work, sometimes don't, but not being able to florking paste is a deal-breaker.

    BlowPurp,

    I'm trying to not do a system install, but am wondering if it may have to do with something from the security upgrades on firefox. That was the only change to my system when it stopped working and I had elayed doing it for a few days, hence the timelime with the original poster. I also thought it may be a mac issue, but the original poster did not inlude their platform. Now I know its not a mac thing (adobe has dropped the ball with making the software work completely for the newer OSX).

    The white space issue may be one of the quirky things that it DW does. It doesn't allow multiple spaces, but I don't get the line breaks. Is this DW to DW copying or from outside DW?

    I guess we have to help ourselves.

    I never experienced this issue before this pasting problem occured.

    >Is this DW to DW copying or from outside DW?

    Copying from DW to anywhere else.

    I am also running the latest Firefox (10.0.0.2)

    Can you give a summary? Did it just involve Dreamweaver? Did you reset your preferences?

    I stated experiencing the same thing today with Dreamweaver CS4 on a Win7 Prof OS machine. I moved my Dreamweaver configuration folder from C:\Users\UserProfile\AppData\Roaming\Adobe out of that directory, reopened Dreamweaver so the config file basically recreated itself, and paste function now works.

    Granted, I didn't have a bunch of configs/personalizations to Dreamweaver but you can always copy back over pieces of the original configuration folder that you moved until the paste function breaks again.

    I did finally figure this out for Mac. I created a new user to test to see if it was profile or system wide. It was just my account.

    I copied the Configuration Files from the new account (user>library>application support>adobe>dreamweaver) and replaced them on my account. DW did not like it till I re-trashed the preferences.

    I worked fo a month without copy and paste, wow, what we take for granted.

    I am also unable to get Paste to work in CS5.5.  It worked fine in CS5. I'm using 32 bit system w/ XP Pro. I've rebooted, but it does not work. I can not find the aforementioned directory - C:\Users\UserProfile\AppData\Roaming\Adobe.  It just is not on my computer.

    I can edit my pages in coding mode just fine.. but when i copy and paste in design mode, i get a few <p> paragraph tags instead of the actual code i want to display. Did the deed in the preferences reovals, etc and this doesnt not solve the problem.

    Really need a solution and a fix to this.

    Crashes, installation, JavaScript errors, and unexplained problems

    If Dreamweaver is acting erratically, or if you see a message saying "the following JavaScript error(s) occurred",  it's usually a sign of a corrupt cache file. The first thing to try should always be to delete the file cache. If that doesn't work, delete your personal Configuration folder. Full instructions are in Deleting a corrupted cache file.

    Have done this and it does not rectify my problem.

    Here is the issue:

    I copy for example:

    <td>test text </td>

    paste in another row and a new row is supposed to have the same thing. instead i get this:

    <tr>

                  <td>test text </td>

                </tr>

                <tr>

                  <td><p>test text </p>

                    <p></p></td>

                </tr>

    this is a common occurance no matter what I do. even with images.

    I cannot do any work effectively until this is resolved. I am basically stalled.

    Validate your code & fix reported errors.  I suspect you have unbalanced <p> tags in your document which DW is trying to "fix" for you.

    I seriously doubt the minor errors have anything to do with copying and pasting in design view.

    This what happens in Design view not in code view

    Here is the issue:

    I copy for example:

    <td>test text </td>

    paste in another row and a new row is supposed to have the same thing. instead i get this:

    <tr>

                  <td>test text </td>

                </tr>

                <tr>

                  <td><p>test text </p>

                    <p></p></td>

                </tr>

    this is a common occurance no matter what I do. even with images. I do not want to have to resort to exclusively copying and pasting in code view.. takes too long.

    Don't you wish tech forums listed a question and nobody else would post long, useless comments along the lines of "me too," "call Adobe," or "reboot and try again?"

    It would also be useful if clicking "Was this helpful?" to move cmMCHUGH'S solution to the top post:

    "I moved my Dreamweaver configuration folder from C:\Users\UserProfile\AppData\Roaming\Adobe out of that directory, reopened Dreamweaver so the config file basically recreated itself, and paste function now works."

    Tried all the above, including recreating config file, but nothing worked for me. Then realized it might be an operating system problem (use XP-Pro) and found a solution to that problem that involved deleting Skype Click To Call. (You don't have to delete the actual Skype program, just the addon.) After that, the paste function with formatting worked again. What a relief!

    that just made my year! what a frustrating issue!  how the hell did the Skype Add-On in Chrome screw up Dreamweaver? What a mess.

    Re: non-working Paste function (Mac OS 10.6.8, DW CS5)

    Called Adobe Support, got through annoying voicemail system to real person who spoke passable but not great English. He walked me through the steps below. HOWEVER, while DW was relaunching and I was waiting for it to update the site cache the call disconnected! Fortunately the fix work or I'd have been VERY unhappy having to go through the cumbersome phone process again.

    As best I can remember, here's what he had me do (and it worked):

    Quit DW

    Go to Finder > Users > (my user name)

    Open Library > Application Support > Adobe

    Rename "Dreamweaver CS5" > "Old Dreamweaver CS5"

    Go back to Library, then > Preferences

    Rename "Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Prefs" > "Old Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Prefs"

    Restart DW.

    Good luck!

    Interactiveal (just above this post) - bless you. Your wonderfully simple solution worked instantly!

    Just changed the names of these 2 files for CS6, and worked like a charm. Fast. Easy. What a strange problem - I was tearing my hair out for the last month, when it stopped working. This solution should somehow be posted at the top of the page, so people can find it. I read through everything else, and was very discouraged. Is there a way to make more helpful answers higher up on the page? (I have CS6 on a MacBook Pro, 10.6.8)
