after effects 64 bit wont install on my 64 bit system

I have recently purchaced After Effects cs4 for Mac osx.

 

I am running OSX 10.6 on an imac core 2 duo with 4 gig ram... IN 64 BIT! however when I insert my Adobe After Effects Cs4 CD and run the set up I instantly get this message:

 

Adobe After Effects CS5 is installable only on a 64-bit system

 

extreamily annoying!

 

how can i convince adobe after effects to belive me that my mac OSX is running in 64 bit?! in terminal my sytem check clearly says: kernel architecture is set to: x86_64

 

please can somebody help me?

    I'm confused. You mention both CS4 and CS5. Which are you trying to install?

     

    Also, can you confirm the exact model name of the CPU?

    Some older core duo processors are 32bit only. You cannot install any 64bit software on them. Still, since your OS seems to run correctly with 64bit kernel extensions (or at least claims it does), something seems wrong.... As Todd said, further clarification is needed.
