Help with ungrouping please

Forgive my ignorance as a tyro user. I'm having a real problem ungrouping some text I've made into shapes. The group/ungroup option in the Object Menu is greyed out. Can anyone please  tell me what I'm doing wrong - aside from thinking I might understand Indesign!
