drop shadow causes freeze in illustrator

Illustrator 10.0.2 freezes up when I try to apply a drop shadow to text. I am on Mac OS 10.6.8. 24GB ram.

    What's the document size and DPI? What is your raster DPI setting in the effects menu? What teh size of the shadow? You're simply running out of memory due to excessive settings.

    Hi,

     

    Try applying the drop shadow on the text in the blank new document and check.

     

    Also Go to Illustrator menu-->preferences-->plugin and scratch disk

     

    Change the "Primary" and "Secondary" to "Mac HD" and then check

    I wonder whether it is too late to upgrade to 10.0.3.

    Thanks to all of you who responded. So far, no luck.

     

    Mylenium-- I changed setting in effects menu to 72(screen). Shadow set to defaults. Not a memory issue. I have 24 GB of ram.

    Manish_1988 -- I changed scratch drives and now have 95GB on primary and almost 2 TB on secondary.

    Jacob-- Most frustrating, downloaded 10.0.3, but file format (.hqx) not supported by Stuffit or Zipeg.

    Fletcher,

     

    You might try  to Move the folder with Illy closed. That will reset the preferences; it is reversible so you can get your custom settings back.

    Thanks, Jacob. That did the trick. However, when AI opens, there is a dialogue box asking if I want to update. If I say yes, then the problem is back. I've gone back to my App folder, didn't update. It still is 15.0.02, and it doesn't freeze up.

    I believe it is better to just leave it where it is, then.

     

    I have no clue what the update does/did and what you are missing, if anything.
