PSE10 Add-Ons

Apr 15, 2012 12:37 PM

As a long time user of PSE3,I have accumulated quite a few add-ons over the years such as Hidden Power, Grants Tools and other miscellaneous plug-ins.

This year however my son decided to bring me up to date, gave me PSE10,and so I'd be interested in forum opinions on the best add-ons for my new software - both free and paid for.

Without a doubt, the very reasonably priced Elements+ add-in:

is my choice for the most powerful and versatile one out there.

A lot of what is Grant's tools is also in PSE now, and some things don't work anymore, but there is an abbreviated version available for PSE 10, too, although there's nothing that isn't also in Elements+.

    Hi there,

I am a beginner to Photoshop Elements and have questions about this very issue. What are "Grant's tools"? What I am looking for are add-ons that would go under filters catagory: looking to find more special effects (like sparkles, flame, lightning etc).

    Thank You for your help.

Neither Grant's tools nor Elements+ has those kinds of special effects you're looking for.  (The link for E+ will lead you to its online help which will thoroughly explain what it can do.)

If you search the Web for

    photoshop plug-ins

    photoshop actions

you'll get several million results.  Just be sure the plug-in or action specifically states that it will work in PSE.  We can give you some pointers about installing them.

Thank you very much for your help.

What are the most important things I need to know -other than making sure the plug-in works in PSE10? And what plug-ins would you recommend?

I guess the two most important things are to keep looking around for new ideas, and not purchase an add-in unless you can't find a free one that does the same thing.  It's real easy to go nuts and install a whole lot of stuff, but every additional add-in does eat up some computer resources, so my advice is to only install things you really need.  (I just wish I would follow my own advice.... )

I tend to look for something that will solve a particular image problem, like making a featureless white sky transparent, or getting rid of powerlines, etc.

Here's good link with lots of info and screenshots of different plugins for photoshop and/or elements.

By no means a complete listing, but you can get a pretty good idea of what kinds of plugins are available.

Thank you very much. I wonder if I should take out my new posting "Best Plug-ins for a beginner" ?

Check out the Adobe Photoshop Exchange.

    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=productHome&exc= 16&loc=en_us

Enter in the search box the effect you want, for example "sparkles".

Even though the exchange is named Photoshop, many of the add-ons work with Elements as well. For example I have the brush set "Skip Star Sparkle PS6" which can be downloaded at

    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail& loc=en_us&extid=1044727

The description reads "Compatible product(s):  Photoshop 6.x" but the brushes work in PSE.

    Grant's tools info/download links:

    http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/index.html

    and

    http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51319

But as Ken said, they don't do the sort of things you want.

Found most of what I'm looking for but I don't see under the compatible programs PSE 10: Time for a silly question ....Are the plug-in for CS5,CS4,CS3 all right to download on PSE 10? (I guess you could also say its a desperate question)

    Thanks for your help

If they don't say they're compatible with PSE10, you can ask the author if they are; otherwise you'll just have to take your chances and see if they work.
