image merge

I'm trying to merge two images in PS CS5 on a mac. They're the same size and everything, but when I try dragging the image across no new layer gets created. When I create a layer and try dragging that I get a message saying the destination file can't accept it. could anyone help please?

    What color mode and bit depth are the images?

     

    Image>Mode.

     

     

    For example if the destination image is bitmap, index color or multichannel then you can't have layers.

     

    You might try changing the color mode to RGB Color under Image>Mode.

    Other options might be that the receiving doc is in QuickMask Mode or does not have the composite channel selected …
