Layer Panel Select Icons

I have noticed that sometimes the layer select icons, the little icons to the right of a layer title are sometimes white and sometimes black ... I would love to know what that means and why they turn black sometimes?

    You are referring to the target symbol. If it is blak then there is a special appearance applied to the object (more then just fill & stroke). This is one of Illustrator's central aspects. You should read about it in the manual.

    Many thanks, You say central aspects of illustrator ... Do you mean the' Target Symbol' OR 'Appearance Palette?

    Many thanks for your response ... I assume you mean the 'Appearance Panel' is a central aspect of illustrator, which of course it is. Thanks for enlightening about the 'Target Symbol'. I did assume the two were connected but I was not sure. Thanks again.
