Without having $500 per month to throw into Adobe's coffers I need to create interactive documents for colleagues to use on their iPads. The Publishing Suite is massively expensive, and pretty inconvenient too. Can we just skip it entirely? Are we really locked into Adobe to the extent that creating content will be reliant on their 'publishing suite'? Was the cost of CS5.5 not enough?
since you can export to Flash from ID you can use Flash to author iOS content. However be aware that in order to publish your App you must sign up with Apple's App Store for which you can contact Apple directly to find out how to go about doing that. There are fees affiliated with that step as well.
. As Flash does not run on iPad, using flash files is not a solution.
Ah, but you are mistaken my friend. Flash CS5 and beyond has a port to iOS as well as Air For Android devices with more devices in the works. You can export/compile your Flash App that you imported from InDesign to an iOS native App that has publishing options for iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. You can take my word for it. Initially Steve Jobs from Apple was against this port and Apple wasn't supporting it but he has since recanted from his disownership of this marriage between the platforms. You are correct, Flash is not natively supported although there is an iSwifter browser which can load Flash content natively in iOS that you get from the App Store, but when you export an App from Flash CS5 or later you can export as long as you have an Apple Developer License under iOS.

you may not want to distribute the apps to everyone but you can make the App available on the App Store for your colleagues to download onto their devices and use to view the presentations.

Thank you, very helpful feedback indeed.
So we would export from Indesign and then export again from Flash? I'll have to check out some Adobe TV episodes to see how. Have not worked in Flash before so will be a learning curve. I assume it doesn't mean recreating the entire thing in Flash? Oh well, new skills here we come...
You may found eDocker Tablet Publisher usefull. It´s a paid software but you have to pay only one flat fee and you can use it as much as you like.
With eDocker you can convert your InDesign layout/file to HTML5 web-app in couple of minutes. And you can add videos, hyperlinks and html-content to your pages in eDocker. Then you simply publish it as web-app. You can upload that web-app to your own server and start to share it´s URL adress to anyone you like with email, facebook etc.
End-user can read it with web-browser of iPad or computer. iPad users can even install it to their home screen desktop as native apps and use them later in full screen mode from there, even without internet connection.
