I have use LR since LR2 and run it on a number of computers. Never have had any crash problems but this version frequently crashes. Very predictably on import/exports of Catalogs but also other times as well. Regretably while a RC, I had hoped for better so I can use it with my 5dIII.
Happy to provide whatever feedback to help
I see that this is your second attempt. The Adobe Labs page for Lightroom 4.1 RC links to this web site for discussions. You need to provide more information; operating system, how much RAM, etc.. Provide as much detail about your system as possible.
Dell Studio xps 22gb Ram I7 processor 1tb/2tb internal. 2-3tb external, 2 2tb were also used to move data
Total records about 70,000 (not sure it is relevant, low volume done on notebook but have not seen it crash there...Total records there might reach 10k between notebook and 1tb passport if remote shoot is large
First issue with the system crashing is when I try to import a catalog that I have created from my desktop to go into the main library. Each library was created as a smart collection to help deal with the 5dIII conversions which on some were DNG (with that release candidate) and subsequently RAW when 4.01RC was released. My smart collections were segregated by capture date and file type (to leverage any processing done on my notebook). Catalogs were roughly between 1200 and 5000 images between 5 dates plus one that contained all the DNGs.
When I would start the import, I had to babysit as it 90% of the time crashed at 500 records. Somewhat odd to me is that is often (90%) would crash after restarting at multiples of 500-meaning at 1000, 1500,2000 and 2500 images imported. No error message other that the screen would gray out and then would say Lightroom shutting down...do you want to send MS info and the like
Never had any problems with any version of LR crashing before
Second Issue is that the system crashed 75% of the time when taking the smart collection and exporting as a catalog. Again gray out the screen and says Adobe PhotoshopLightroom is shutting down....do you want to send to Microsoft
Third issue with shutting down has to do with occasional shutting down after editing as a smart image and saving back to LR...5% of the time
To mitigate, I reinstall LR4.01 numerous times, even from fresh downloads. I also tried a combination of external
and internal drives to see if I could see a pattern. It proved irrelevant the combo I used to export/import.
I haven't got a clue where to start on that big of a system. I'm just running a 32 bit 4 GB RAM Windows 7 machine. I have had Lightroom 4.1 RC shut down once. It's really running stable. But maybe if I respond and we keep bumping this thread perhaps someone with more knowledge than I have will be able to help you.
Yes, Adobe Labs points to here, but it's not the "official" forum for registering issues.
Here is the place for support: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_fami ly_photoshop_lightroom

$50 for 4gb made it easy. 22 Gb instead of 24 had to do with how many sticks they had at the time. Most folks I know are loading up their machines to the max when they are running LR, CS5 and Nik …certainly has helped
Actually the machine had been doing fine..memory installed months ago.
What changed? I got the new canon 5diii and was up in Alaska taking images of Eagles. Could not import them into LR the first few days unless I converted to the new DNG converter. Then we got word up there that 4.01 was out and it supported RAW file conversion for the new camera..moved to it and uploaded directly from the cards.
When I got home I loaded 4.01 to my desktop and proceeded to work on exporting images from the notebook to the desktop as I always do....export as a catalog/import as a catalog...
that is when the fun was over...been fighting this for over a week and have been through my machine from head to toe with Dell Techs....
I assume you are talking about Lightroom 4.1 RC. There is no 4.01 RC. Now, first of all, I know very little about Canon cameras. But I know that many of them will take a compressed raw file, and Lightroom doesn't like those compressed files. Is that possibly what happened in your case?
I am but I owned a software company for a long time...anything that came out that quickly after a major release would have been .01...so old habits die slowly..
canon files are not the problem....dies even in adobe's DNG format
We have continued late in the evening working with the technicians to figure the issue....we have changed users, catalogs, uninstall and reinstall the software and it just crashes....windows records an application error 1000. Uninstall and reinstall did appear to help but might have been a coicindence...the program still crashed at the end.
