I'm completely new to Dreamweaver and am trying to use it to update an existing website. I exported the website files back onto my PC.
When I open a page in DW to edit it, the Spry menu bar (which works with horizontal drop down on the website) shows as an unordered list. If I preview it, the list remains, i.e. the menu bar doesn't re-appear.
If I click the 'turn styles off/on' button, nothing happens.
I would be extremely grateful for any advice as to what I can do in order to get the page to open in DW with the menu bar functioning.
Many thanks
Hi,
it sounds like your DW doesn't find the files situated in the "SpryAssets" directory. Please control your pathes. If there is a deeper nested directory or a file you need these ../ or ../../.
If not, please load up your website onto your server, no matter how it looks like
and give us the link to it.
Hans-Günter
Thank you so much, Hans-Günter.
I really am completely new to DW, but I did work out that the SpryAssets directory was important. The folder is there, and it has 7 files in it, SpryMenyBar etc.
Please would you be so kind as to let me know how to tell DW to look for the files.
Apologies for my ignorance, and many thanks for your support.
I'm not sure if the following information helps:
At the top, next to source code button , if I click on SpryMenuBar.js button, I get the message 'SpryMenuBar.js' is not on the local disk.' Get
When I click on 'Get', this message appears 'spyMenuBar.js is not in a defined state.
Many thanks
Hello cheekbones,
here my "cookbook". First open one of your files, and jump to the place where you want to insert a spry menu.
next step select the layout:
If you had used a new DW file as I did for this example, your source code would like this:
The two files, which you need, takes DW of itself and expects that your files are stored in a folder "SpryAssets". If DW does not find them it will ask you for them.
Good luck!
Hans-Günter
OK, I don't think I'm following the recipe properly...
The website was created by someone else, so it already had the menu bar. The menu bar works online. I copied the files onto my computer, and then when I open the pages in DW, the problem happens.
I've looked at the code, but it looks correct (I compared it to the code for a new a new test page with meunu bar that I created) - here it is...

Hi cheekbones,
I copied your source code into my DW and I used my SpryAssets, in the same directory. The spry menu bar worked in this case, by deleting these ../.
And in this context, the question arises, why did you insert a SpryMenuBarVertical, as I can see here:
<link href="SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarVertical.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />?
In my opinion you can delete it there.
Hans-Günter
P.S.
cheekbones > Wangenknochen?![]()
Guten morgen, Hans-Günter!
Thank you for this, I am just rushing out to see clients, and will look this afternoon. I will delete the folder ../. and if I understand correctly, also delete the vertical bar file.
Thank you, bis nachher.
D
PS Yes, Cheekbones = Wangenknochen, aber was ist die blaue Stunde??
OK, I am being really useless, many apologies
Here is what I have: i copied the website back onto my PC and have a folder with the following folders:
Is this what you mean by having the SpryAsset in the same directory?
Here are the files inside the SpryAsset directory
Remember I completely new to this, and need to have very, very simple and basic instructions!
Hi D,
sorry no images in your note. Here a screenshot of MY directory:
what gives with my
<script src="SpryAssets/SpryMenuBar.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<link href="SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
Hans-Günter
P.S.
Blaue Stunde > Blue Hour is today mainly a poetic term for the time between sunset and the twilight darkness of the night and for the time just before sunrise.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_hour
I think we have got there...
Just so others can see what I did and to check with Hans-Günter that I haven't done anything stupid, here is a summary:
When I copied an existing website onto my PC so that I could work on the pages, the Spry menu showed as permanently expanded, and stayed that way if I put them back into the website.
Hans-Günter worked it out straight away as he is clever, but it took me a while...
With the page open in DW, I clicked on the Code button in the toolbar.
Looking down the page, I found the SpryAssets section, which looked like this:
<script src="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBar.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<link href="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link href="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarVertical.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
</head>
The culprits are the ../ which have been inserted just in front of SpryAssets. I deleted all three occurrences, and saved.
Now click on the Design button on the toolbar, and all should be well, with the menu bar neatly gathered up... Click on the Preview button on the toolbar to double check that the menu bar is correct and functioning in a browser.
Hans-Günter, thank you again for your patience!
Hi D,
you welcome, good luck furthermore!
Let me add to your statement the importance of my suggestions which I expressed already in point 1: "it sounds like your DW doesn't find the files situated in the "SpryAssets" directory. Please control your pathes. If there is a deeper nested directory or a file you need these ../ or ../../."
Hans-Günter
I wish I understood what that meant... if this is something I need to do, then please explain in detail!
I found this at the bottom of one page - does the ../ part of ../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarDownHover.gif" also need to be removed?
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var MenuBar1 = new Spry.Widget.MenuBar("MenuBar1", {imgDown:"../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarDownHover.gif", imgRight:"../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarRightHover.gif"});
//-->
</script>
