How can you link excel to an already existing table cell in InDesign?

Nov 28, 2011 2:09 PM

I have been linking microsoft excel documents to InDesign in an attempt to make updating repetitive items more automated. We use this so that every time the excel file is updated, the InDesign document will be updated as well automatically. Is it possible to use excel linking (I have been placing the excel document in InDesign and selecting certain excel cells to link to) to place certain excel cells into existing table cells in InDesign? I have only been able to link an excel document to InDesign by creating a new table in InDesign and then formatting it or placing the formatted excel file into InDesign. I have been unable to figure out how to link excel to an InDesign table or cell that already exists. Thanks for your help!

As near as I can tell this can't be done. The closest I've come to it is to build my 1st table via linking and then duplicating that table several times to meet my overall needs. Then I can use the links panel to relink each individual instance to a new excel doc. Saves me a bit of work, but I agree that it would have been easier to replace existing unlinked table data with a new excel doc link.
