RAW photo into Photshop CS5 as a Smart Object.

I am trying to open a RAW photo in Photohsop CS5 as a Smart Object.  I have the photo selected in Bridge.  When I go to execute File>Place in Bridge CS5 the menu entry indicates there should be a menu displayed.  However, clicking on Place does not bring up a menu. 

 

In Photoshop there is open a blank file to receive the photo. 

 

Why do I not receive a menu?

    You need an image file to be already open in Photoshop.  You can then 'Place' your Smart Object into that image file.

    In order to open a raw image into Photoshop as a SO you'll need to open the image in Camera Raw and click on the info link (in blue, it's the Workflow Options) and select the option to Open in Photoshop as a Smart Object.

    There is a blank psd file open in Photoshop.  I am not given the opportunity to place the photo into that psd file. 

     

    Is there a link missing between Photoshop and Bridge?

    I open the image in Bridge as a Camera RAW file.  I click on the blue label in the center below the image.  In workflow options I select 'Open in Photoshop as Smart Object'.  I click on OK, and nothing appears to happen. 

     

    I open Photoshop, and all I find I find is the blank psd I have set up to receive the RAW image.  There is no indicaton that anything has changed.

    When you click OK in the dialog, do you then Open Object button in Camera Raw?

    After clicking OK, I am presented with three options below the image: 1) Save Imagge, 2) Cancel and 3) Done. 

     

    While the photo is clearly open in Camera RAW, there are no options displayed in addition to the three mentioined. 

     

    I do not see an Open Object button.

    When you have the Workflow Option dlog open, did you check the option to Open in Photoshop as a SO? If you do, then ACR will have a different button called Open Object. Clicking on that button will open the image in Photoshop as a SO.

    Are you not seeing all the buttons?

    Normally I have ACR set to "Open Image" in Photoshop. By temporarily holding down the SHIFT key the "Open Image" button will change to "Open Object"

     

    This is what I did while creating this screenshot. There is also the tool tip showing up in the screenshot.

    Reinstalling Photoshop fixed the problem.  Apparently there was some disconnect between Bridge and Photoshop which prevented their interaction.
