using Hotspot image map to link to lightbox effect

Hi all,

My question is...

can a link, established by hotspot image mapping, be used to display an image via Pretty Photo (a lightbox-like tool).

I have an image that is being used as a primary graphic on the page. What I want to do is map a portion of that image (using Dreamweaver's hotspot mapping) resulting in the user having the ability to click on that hotspot to load a .png image in Pretty Photo.

In all cases of a link being established from a "hotspot" the image opens a new page, which of course means the "lightbox" functionality is not being called.

I am fairly new to web design and would appreciate any help on resolving this issue.

background...

I am using Dreamweaver CS4

Pretty Photo is very similar to Lightbox. I have chosen this because it is a single tool to display images, galleries, video, and iFrame. I really want to stick with it at this point. From what I have read elsewhere, I am not the only person with this problem and the exact same problem seems to exist with all "lighbox like" tools.

Already checked...

I have already determined that the effect is working on many other parts of the page and site.

I have typed and retyped and retyped the (rel="prettyPhoto") and tried placing it in varying places in the link to no avail.

Please solve this!!!

iX
