new to illustrator, trouble colorizing vector

Apr 21, 2012 3:32 PM

I have a logo drawing that has been transformed into a vector via live trace.  The artist did some touch ups in illustrator to recover the detailed brushstrokes, by layering with an imported jpeg, and accidentally included a white background.  Rather than have her redo the whole thing, I selected the background white box and clicked "no fill" and then went in with the direct selection tool and deleted all the white parts.  Now it's black with a transparent background, so that part is fixed.  But now I can't color it for some reason.  The color boxes at the bottom of the tool panel turn grey with a question mark, and when I try to color anyway, half the picture gets a big blob of grey on it.  What's going on?  (I just learned illustrator this week out of necessity to get my business cards to completion, so I'm very new to this program.)

Show us a screen shot with the layers and appearance panel and the layer containg the live trace expanded so we can see the paths as well.

Also select the art and go tot he colro panel and from the flyout see if it is grayscale.

But I know what's wrog now

    select the art

then go to Object>Live Trace you will have options to expand the live trace in orrde to color a live trace you have to expand it.

Also if it is a color image you are tracing then you can also use a color live trace options and you will get the inherent colors of the image.

Live Trace options to choose coolr and to ignore white etc. Read the help files about live trace

You need to post the files somewhere so others can examine it, or screenshots of the Layers panel with the art selected. There's really no way anyone knows what's going on without more information.

    Sgt,

I have a logo drawing that has been transformed into a vector via live trace.

In addition to what has been said already, someone is bound to say: 'I have a bad feeling about this.'
