Anyone else have a problem with tools not working?

With no particular cause, int he middle of working on things, tools like lasso tool, eraser, the brush or the clone stamp stop working.

The program will hang for a while and then I am able to switch tools, while using one particular tool at that time won't work. Until I restart photoshop.

Changing Open to GL of/on won't work, and it is not because of the autosave in the background.

Anyone with this same problem?

Can you give us more information about your system? Photoshop help>system info

Have you verified your video board is supported and that you have the most recent driver?
What features use the GPU and how do I troubleshoot GPU issues?

What if you try lowering the memory used by Photoshop to something like 60%?
You can do that in Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage

I'm wondering about the 8 gigs of RAM, and 7.5 of them are allocated to Photoshop at 79% -- Makes sense you're seeing some other slowdown.

Yes, I have found enough bugs to make it buggy. Not that I am not excited about all the new cool features and still plan to upgrade asap.

The Clone Stamp tool only works on the active layer, the Smudge tool is unusable unless set at 1% opacity. There are a couple of others but cannot remember them at the moment.

I posted a new topic about also titled Clone Stamp Tool, xxxxx, not working. I assume Adobe is aware of all the bugs.

I am not sure if it's the same thing. I do get hangs when in the middle of editing. I haven't been able to pin it on any tool, selection, or function.

At first I thought it was because the splash screen for the beta hadn't come in and that made File>Open Recent unresponsive. It's as if the program doesn't really wake up until you get rid of the splash screen.

But that isn't it entirely because it happens during editing as well, long after the splash screen's gone. Suddenly, nothing responds--not tools, not menu items, not layers. It has happened with Topaz Plug Ins at least once, but the rest of the time it's been while working within Photoshop itself.

But photoshop didn't stop responding (according to the task manager), the cursor (whether mouse or stylus) still responds, no error messages, no crash. A little time goes by, then it responds again without exiting Photoshop, restarting, or anything else.

What I have noticed happens everytime I have this problem is that, if I just pressed a menu item (such as Layers, or File, or Edit) or a tool icon (such as the brush) it will remain in the selected position with either the darkened box around the menu item or the little outline around the tool). Now that I think of it, I think that the only common trigger is clicking on something. This can go on for as long as a couple of minutes, but it always resolves itself.

The only tool that might have choked during actual use is the lasso tool on polygonal mode. I just couldn't seem to make the next click.

I'm thinking now that it has something to do with saving in the background and--if that's the case--I'll live with it gladly. But it puzzles me because I think my system should be able to handle the extra memory involved in background saving.

I recognize this!
At first I noticed this happens while background saving, you can see in the tab that PS is doing that.
But the same thing happens while NOT saving. And yes things tend to work again after waiting for a while.
It does take a very long time for some things though.
Not in the middle of using a tool, but often when I take a brush to paint on a layer mask, that makes PS hang half of the time, and it takes about 5 minutes before PS will respond again. I can move the mouse but there will be no reaction when selecting anything.

And, just this morning, I noticed that, while the behavior is NOT limited to very large documents (ex: 3.52 GB) it is CONSIDERABLY more pronounced in very large documents. I hadn't worked on one in a while, I'd been working on ordinary shots from a 10.3 mp camera.

What you describe about the moment of taking a brush (or picking any new activity) being the moment the stalling kicks in (as opposed to in the middle of doing something) is what I have found so odd. This never happened to me in other versions, if the program was overwhelmed, it just crashed. This is like stopping in the middle to take a break before going on.

Yep, I just had it happen on a very small document. Clicked on the healing brush (and whether I use the shortcut or click on the tool does not seem to make a difference), and it stalled for about 3 minutes. I really like the new photoshop so I keep trying, hoping to find out what actually causes it, but no dice.

Have you tried turning off the additional plugins folder to troubleshoot this problem at all?
Just to see if something in there is causing some of the freezes you're seeing.

Additional Plug-ins folder: C:\Users\Carmen\Documents\Adobe--Photoshop--PLUG INS--EXTRA FOLDER\

Most or all of those plugins should be able to work with Photoshop CS6, but it hard to tell if any added plugins are causing your basic Photoshop to not function properly.

I've worked for several hours without a snag. Part of that time has been purposefully trying to make it happen, not doing real work, and it didn't. Although I can't understand the connection, so far it seems as if the problem is fixed.

Yeah, Good to see you're on the road to being fixed ckc48,

There are some plug-ins that aren't updated to 64bit perhaps, or some other plug-in that may be a duplicate of another plugin Photoshop is already loading.
So you CAN set an additional plug-ins folder up, just make sure no plug-ins in there are causing Photoshop any grief!

ckc48, first, make sure that there are no updates to your plug-ins
Try to uninstall all third party plug-ins, then test and reinstall them one by one until you find the culprit. Then report here, and do contact its creator so that they can fix their bugs.
