Problems previewing animated blur

Whenever I apply a Fast blur or Gaussian blur I can preview it. But as soon as I add a key frame to animate the blurriness the blur goes away and there's no preview of it anymore. Even when I hit render there's no sign of the effect.

Am I missing somthing?

I'm using Premiere CS5.5 on a MacPro.

Sorry, here's what I've got:

Premiere version: 5.5.2
Installed updates: yes
OS: Mac OSX 10.7.3
Computer specs: 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-COre Intel Xeon
Memory: 12GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Source footage: Red R3D 2K raw file / 23.976fps in a 1080p Sequence
no eror message
Has this worked before: this is the 1st time trying on this new system with this new install of CS5.5
No 3rd party effects
Avid codecs installed
Other IO hardware: BlackMagic HDLink
No Mercry playback aceleration
Problem happens in preview and in final render.
I've attached 2 screenshots that'll hopefully illustrate the problem.
