A page Layout question that is plaguing me.

I want to be able to span an image across the front and back cover of a "catalog" document and cannot figure out how to set the document up in ID so that I can layout the page. Please someone give me some insight. I am new to InDesign, so pardon the rookie question.

    Is this going to be what is commonly termed a "self-cover" document where the cover is printed on the same stock and folded and stitched (stapled) at the same time as the inside pages, or is the cover going to need to be a separate document because it will be printed on different paper or your book is too thick to stitch and will be "perfect bound" like a paperback book?

    Peter, the document will be a "self-cover" document. Same stock as the entire book, and saddle stapled on the fold. It will act as a 8 page product catalog.

    Place the image on the first page and stretch the frame out to where the backpage would be if it was on the same spread. Make sure it's positioned exactly where it needs to be.

     

    Copy to the clipboard and navigate to the back page.

     

    Edit>paste in place.

     

    Adjust the frames appropriately.

     

    I would suggest locking both objects.

    Bob, am I missing something, I thought the ability to do "spreads" as they are printed was possible. I remember this faintly from my first use of InDesign years ago (I can't recall the version, it was for a previous job). Is this being considered for future releases? Just seems backwords to what one would think, at least from my perspective.

    That’s called imposition and it’s the printer’s job, not yours.

     

     

     

    In fact, doing it yourself could wind up costing you money since the printer will have to fix it.

     

     

     

    Just follow my directions and you should be fine.

     

     

     

    The only other thing you can do is create a separate file…talk to the printer before doing so.

    The third alternative, which is no better than Bob's original suggestion, but might make you feel better, is to select the first page in the Pages panel, right click and uncheck allow selected spread to shuffle, then drag the last page up and add it to the first spread. You'll probably have to restart sectioning to get the page numbers working correctly again.

    In which case I would definitely talk to the printer first.

    Yeah. Or move the page in the PDF back where it belongs before sending it.
