Apr 25, 2012 12:18 PM

I have a new copy of Premiere Elements 9 installed on my brand new PC.  After a few hours editing my first project it regualry crashes, with a generic windows error.  What can I do other than start again?

It depends on whether the crash is related to your computer or your project.

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

When you started your Premiere Elements project, which settings did you select? If you selected the correct project settings, there will be NO red lines above your clips when you add them to your timeline. Is that the case in your project?

Also, what operating system are you using, how fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have? How much free, clean, freshly defragmented space is available on your hard drive?

Are you editing to you C or main hard drive or to a second hard drive?

Have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime and have you manually gone to Windows Update (if you're on a Windows machine) to ensure you have even the non-critical updates for your computer?

Brand new computers can be MONTHS out of date.

Canon makes miniDV, HDV tape-based, AVCHD camcorders and still cameras. What model of camcorder is your video from?

What project setting did you select when you started your Premiere Elements project?

Have you gone to the ATI or nVidia sites to ensure you have the latest driver for your video card?

    >some red lines

If you import video to a new project and there is an IMMEDIATE red line over the timeline, your project and video do not match

Windows is not always right when it comes to video drivers... you need to go directly to the nVidia site

You also are most likely not going to be able to edit video from a Powershot in Premiere Elements. That video is an MJPEG MOV, a format not supported by Premiere Elements.

Your best bet is a program called Quicktime Pro, available for $29 from Apple.com.

For crashes and hangs, I would start with this ARTICLE, that begins with a checklist of setting up things for PrE to work best, then goes into tuneup tips for the system and OS, and finishes with links to help you troubleshoot problems.

As others have commented, crashes and hangs can come from many sources.

    Good luck,
