Hi all,
Maybe this is more of a question for the Prelude forums, but I don't think those exist yet...
Prelude in CS6 looks like an awesome tool for speeding up post-production, but one of the most important aspects of editing is syncing audio to video. I think it would be an exceptional feature if, in Audition or Prelude, you could replace a video file's audio track (such as the track that would be captured through the camera's mic, if shooting on a DSLR) with a mastered audio track from a separate recorder. The two files, audio and video, would be grouped together and move throughout your workflow, meaning that in Prelude you could create subclips or rough cuts and take the "good" audio file with you into Premiere.
I wasn't sure if I should put this on the "Features Suggestion" board, because I don't know if it's a feature yet! I'm looking forward to seeing how the Production Suite works, but I was hoping to hear some feedback, either from other users or from Adobe, regarding wether such a feature exists already or can be implemented. I know it would save me a great deal of time, and I imagine there are a few of you out there who would agree...
Regards,
Chris
Sort of, but what abbawabbasandwich is referring to is where the beginning of the audio just needs to be positioned at the right starting point. Auditions new "alignment" feature is really for warping a seperate recording of the same content do that individual characteristics are synchronized.
The current popular tool to accomplish abbawabbasandwichs goal is PluralEyes. I would not be surprised to see this functionality appear in Prelude because it's the more logical step in production where this task typically occurs - an asst editor is given the raw video files and replaces the in-camera audio with the proper stream recorded to a separate recorder, before cutting a rough edit and passing on to the primary dialogue editor, for example.
If our research team at Adobe has a great solution and it makes sense for Audition to include, then I'd push for it. I'll pass it along, but be sure to share this request personally in the Prelude forums so that team knows paying customers want this feature, and not just some geek on the Audition team. ;)
Thanks, _durin_, I'll be sure to do that! It's good to know somebody else out there agrees with me; especially somebody within Adobe! Does a forum exist for Prelude discussion yet? Or is there somewhere else I should take this suggestion?
I'll be shooting a feature film in June, and Being able to sync audio for dailies would literally shave dozens of hours off of editing.
Thanks much for getting back to me. I look forward to getting some hand-on time with CS6!

As a note, I have fwd'd this note on to the folks on the Prelude team.

Hi,
As a pro editor, I'm really surprised, and dismayed, that the automatic audio sync feature so prominent in Final Cut Pro X hasn't appeared yet in PP CS6 or Prelude.
I heard a rumour in the Adobe grapevine that it might finally be coming in the next version of PP in April 2013, but I'd really hoped that it would appear as a point update before that.
Just to be clear, by syncing I mean automatic replacement of the video audio track with audio from a separate recorder, just as outlined by the OP. It's not an esoteric luxury feature, it's day-to-day bread and butter.
PLEASE try to make it earlier than next April!
