I have been successfully using RC1 on my home desktop Mac Pro to process images from my new 5D3, but hadn't upgraded to RC2. Now, I'm on the road getting ready to start a 4 day photo workshop using a MacBook Pro and the same portable drive with all my photo stuff that had been attached to the desktop at home. Sadly, I wasn't smart enough to apply the same LR4 DVD that I had used on my desktop and upgrade to RC1 when that was still available.
So, here in the hotel, I loaded an eval LR4 and then installed RC2 (since it appears that RC1 is not accesible any more). Now, however, LR4 won't open the LR4 catalog that I had processed with RC1.
Thanks for the reply. What happens is that I don't even get into Lightroom
4 RC2. There is an immediate error message saying unexpected error opening
catalog, I have an opportunity to choose a catalog and I designate the LR4
catalog and get the same error. I'm not getting into to main LR4 menus at
Here's a followup comment on my experience. I have now tried taking the
option of creating a new catalog, figuring that I can use that catalog for
my pictures this weekend and sort things out when I get home. Lightroom
refused to open a new catalog on the portable external drive where all my
other catalogs are stored, saying that "Lightroom catalogs cannot be opened
on network volumes, removable storage or read-only volumes." This is very
strange, since there are both LR3 and LR4 catalogs on that same drive and
I've been using them there for more than a year.
Thanks. When I attempt to access the preferences menu item nothing happens.
I don't understand your use of the word "access". My advice was to delete the preferences, not "access" the preferences.
Also try double-clicking on the catalog file itself instead of the Lightroom icon.
You find the location of the preferences file, then in your operating system you navigate to that location and "delete" the file (probably instead of deleting it, you should just move it somewhere else and LR will create a new one; this way you can move it back if it doesn't work)
Sorry to be so apparently ignorant here (and I really appreciate your
patience!), but if you're willing to elaborate somewhat further, that would
be appreciated. It appears that you're talking about an LR preferences
file. My OS is MacOS X (10.6.8). As far as I can tell, all the files
associated with Lightroom on this machine are in one directory and for LR4
there are only an lrcat and an lrdata files. I'm somewhat skeptical that
there is a separate preferences file in this context, but I definitely not
knowledgeable in this space.
I really can't tell you where the preference file is on a MAC, as I don't use Macs.
Here is link to the location for LR3, it might be the same as LR4, I just don't know. The file itself is named com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist
Paige, because we were repeating ourselves so often, I ended up doing a write-up on "Resetting the Preferences" for the Tips and Tricks section over at the Lightroom Forums. You can see it here:
Excellent article Jim. Thanks very much! Between that article and your
tutoring, Paige, I think I have enough to go on, though it may be tomorrow
or the next day before I have time to try this. Thanks, again.
