Using Beta, and opened file that was created in cs5 PS that included Comps, maybe 4 of them. There are many layers, but the file is only at 72 for web.
I wasn't able to click on the different comps in the comp panel. Each time the Beta just popped a warning message saying "this will make the file too large".
Anyone know if this is a purposeful Beta restriction of some sort, feature change I'm not aware of, or a bug? Opened back up in cs5 PS and no problem.
Working in same file later in PS 6 without touching the Comps and it crashed to desktop. No reason given. No other trouble noticed.
Using Windows 7 sp1 64bit. Running an Nvidia Quadro 4000.
It sounds like you're running low on hard drive space.
There aren't any file size restrictions implemented in the beta version of PS CS6, so something else is causing these messages to pop up.
Can you please include your system info from Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog?
Also, if you got crash logs, please send them off to Adobe if you get the option, or if not, please post the crash dumps here in the forums for us to look at!

That does not tell you much... 72 ppi is just half of an equation.
(plus the web does not look at ppi, it could be 720 for all that it matters)
What are the pixel dimensions of your document?

The file is 1055px wide X 795px high @72ppi. (14.653 in X11.042 in) RGB, 8bpc, PS6's file size info in the lower left of window is reporting data size of 2.40M/451.5M.
I only mentioned 72 initially to help explain that the file size isn't approaching the insane as it can with files @300 or above, where there often can be issues just because of that alone.
I have 7 files this size representing page views of a responsive site we are working on. All of them have comps and many layers. There are no "adjustment layers" however. Just groups of regular layers. The comps each have text comments of them in the comps panel. Each one shifts positions of layered items around or visibility on/off. And it seems for every single one of these files, PS6 refuses to allow the use of the Comps panel to switch through them, popping up the same error code which I can repeatedly repeat. "could not complete your request because the result would be too big."
Hope this info helps.
ok, file sent Pete's way. I see someone else just ran into this issue on another post. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4363921#4363921
Maybe between both our files the issue can be figured out.

I still don't undertand the root cause, but hopefully have a workaround for you. In appears something that is save in the Layer Comp 'Position' option is causing the warning. In your sampe file I don't see where you might be taking advantage of that option.
I opened the sample file in Ps CS5 and turned off that option for each comp, saved out a copy, and opened the result in Ps CS6 (Mac 10.6.8). Now I can cycle thru the Layer Comps without getting any warnings.
Have you been seeing this warning on multiple files or just the sample provided?
Hope this helps,
You are right. Turning off the position option on each comps while in CS5, and then opening in CS6 beta does allow me to now flip through the comps. However there definitely are layered items that are having their position changed. With comps, I was showing the views of a lot of items on this site that slide completely, or partially, off screen. A lot of them are just turning the layer on or off, but a few are moving position. One for instance is the "portfolio tab text" and "TAB background transparent" layers towards the bottom of the layers list. (they are non colored layers right below the red colored "arrow" layers). In the last comp "closed container", that tab moves all the way to the right of the file.
Turning off all positioning also oddly just turned off all the semi-transparent white background layers. (layers at the bottom of the layer list "CONTENT DIV WHITE...", "TRANS DIV small trans.." and others (there are a couple unused copies there). Those two with layer titles in CAPS are being slid off the screen by positioning with that last Comp. Oddly, they started on screen. and the last comp was made to slide their position off screen. That large section of white is maybe 2thirds the width of the whole file. So I suppose when that slides off the screen by a changed position, it would make the file dimensions wider if it is including items that are off the working region. I doubt it makes it 300,000px wide. But maybe something wierd is now happening when items go outside the working artboard region. CS5 doesn't seem to care.
Either way, even the items I had the positions sliding on could be handled by duplicate layers that just turn on and off instead as a good work around for now. Thank you for finding that out. That's helps for now.
In the future files though, that would maybe add up to almost double the amount of layers needed to show the same different comp layouts that we could show in CS5 with positioning changes to layers. Since I'm still on CS5 and just using the beta of CS6, I'll probably be keenly watching for a possible fix on this or not while we contemplate the upgrade to our master collections soon. The other features of CS6 PS look great so far.
Just to answer your other questions a bit... Yes I do have a whole set of files based on this same site that all of the same issue. Some of them have different and smaller items that are changing positioning in different areas on the file, all of them near the borders of it. But they also had the larger white box layers. They are showing slide-up/slide-dn divs from the upper right and lower left of the file. So those maybe would be increasing the height of the file. I just tested one of those with the vertical position change items, by deleting the large white backgrounds that slide off the page from each comp. So the only items that reposition off the working screen are items that move vertically. Then opened up in CS6beta and attempted to hit the comps. Still sparks the error.
I'm testing some simple new files with positioning comps right now...
I created some simple 1024x768 72ppi files in cs5 with small boxes that move within the work area. Other files with the small boxes of color moving just outsdie the work area, and another file with a massive oversized color box that starts off screen and a comp pulls it back in view with positioning. Opened all and checked comps in cs6 beta and they all work. No errors. I did notice a delay a couple times when I first hit a different the button for a different comp to show. Only happened right after opening the file in cs6. But the comp still opened. This file was simple, just moving that one box of color layer around with three positioned comps. I don't know if a lot more would be an issue or not. But with these working, it doesn't appear to be an issue simply of how large of an item layer is positioned off the working area. Not with just one of them anyway.
I also added a very large amount of text into the comments area of one of the comps since i had comments in all comps on the offending files. But no error.
I've now created a new file with maybe 5 to 7 items moving around, with over ten comps, including an oversized Tiff image I copied into the file and scaled down. No errors when opening and flipping through comps in CS6. I have no idea why all those other older cs5 files spark errors. The only difference I can see is the shear number of layers in those offending files. I opened one similar older file that is not at 72ppi (rather 96ppi) that has a few less layers then the one I sent in, but still many. That older file does spark the errors when trying to open the comps too. I have no clue. I'll wait and check back here to see if anything more certain about what causes this is found out.
Thanks for all the extra data points. I have logged a bug report so this can be investigated further by developers. I tried looking at the pixel data that's off the canvas and didn't see anything obvious either. We'll need to debug with your sample file to get a better understanding of what's happening.
I'll send you a private message so we can exchange contact info.
