Spry Menu Bar Problem: Changes on default page not inherited on other pages

Apr 27, 2012 9:41 AM

Hi folks,

I have no experience in web designing but my job requires me to do it all at times. I'm an IT tech\Network engineer and been using common sense to edit our main website with dreamweaver. So far everything i did worked fine until editing the menu bar on the main page. Researches and watching tutorials didn't help so hopefully someone here can. Thanks in advance.

So all i did was edit some stuff on the menu by removing some sub menus and adding a link. All was done from the default.aspx file which is the main page. Everythign works fine but when i go to another page it seems like my changes were never done. All other pages have the spry menu code embedded in gray and can't be edited. After taking a good look i realized it was the old code showing. My question is how do i apply my changes to all pages at once?

Here is the code after i made the changes. The previous version had just some extra href lines.

<ul id="MenuBar1" class="MenuBarHorizontal">

      <li style="width:90px;"><a href="default.aspx" style="width:90px; text-align:center;  padding-left:0px;">Home</a></li>

      <li style="width:90px;"><a class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" href="#" style="text-align:center; width:90px; padding-left:0px;">Directory</a>

      <ul>

        <li><a href="judges-dir.aspx">Judicial Staff</a></li>

        <li><a href="case-support.aspx">Administrative Staff</a></li>

      </ul>

  </li>

  <li style="width:136px;"><a href="#" class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" style="text-align:center; width:136px;  padding-left:0px;">Procedural Rules</a>

      <ul>

        <li><a href="documents/procedures/organization-osah.pdf">Organization of OSAH</a></li>

        <li><a href="documents/procedures/administrative-rules-osah.pdf">Administrat ive Rules of Procedure</a></li>

      </ul>

  </li>

  <li style="width:130px;"><a href="/agency-ref-word.html" class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" style="text-align:center; width:130px;  padding-left:0px;">Case Referral</a> </li>

  <li style="width:142px;"><a href="#" class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" style="text-align:center; width:142px;  padding-left:0px;">Court Information </a>

      <ul>

        <li><a href="calendar-options.aspx">Court Calendar</a></li>

        <li><a href="get-decision.php">Decisions</a></li>

        <li><a href="judges-circuit.html">Judicial Circuits</a> </li>

        <li><a href="directions.html">Directions to Court</a></li>

        <li><a href="#" class="MenuBarItemSubmenu">Frequently Asked Questions</a>

            <ul>

              <li><a href="questions.html">English</a></li>

              <li><a href="questions-espanol.html">Espa&ntilde;ol</a></li>

            </ul>

        </li>

        <li><a href="comments.aspx">Questions</a></li>

      </ul>

  </li>

  <li style="width:104px;"><a href="#" class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" style="text-align:center; width:104px;  padding-left:0px;">About Us</a>

UPDATE: Here is the code embedded in all other pages. I guess i need to know where to go or how to edit it.

    Are you familiar with DW "Templates" ?

    Repetitive code like menus are almost always coded on the template page which then populates all the "child pages" which are then uploaded to the server.

    As I recall, this template page (with a .dwt estension) would be found on the local root in a folder named Templates

    I guess you've created .dwt (DreamWeaver Template) files and made edits to other pages based on the template page. This is why DW doesn't let you edit the non-editable regions.

    In this cage, open the page where the code is non-editable, Modify > Template > Detach from Template

    This will make the page standalone and fully editable.

    And if you want to update page/ pages at once, Modify > Template > Update Pages or Update Current Page

    This will circulate the changes that you've done in your template across all pages that are based out of your template on your site. When I say site, it means the site that is defined in Dreamweaver

    When you detach a page from your template, changes you make to your template will not have any effect on the detached page/ file.

    These links should help you understand more about how the DW Templates work:
