After a few years with CS3 I am currently trailling CS5.
I have imported around 300 sites into the Dreamweaver CS5 site manager which of course means I haven't taken the time to specify a seperate folder for each site for local files (the import would take forever).
I do not want to download dependent files to my local machines yet it seems that no matter what setting I go for in EDIT>PREFERENCES>SITE I cannot stop this happening.
I know plenty of people will say "it's best practice" but I should be able to choose whether to work on a live site or local file, the decision shouldn't be made for me.
Is there a fix for this?
First I will stress again how important it is to have a local copy and it is best practice never to edit a live site. If you manage 300 sites and do not a server backing up your clients data, you are doing them a disservice by not maintaining an active backup and testing site.
What is sounds like is happening is that DW is trying to download related files. The related files allows you to see included files, such as CSS, and be able to edit that from within the Related Files pane. If you go to the preferences and disable related files in the General section it may stop this getting of dependant files for you. However, this is not something you set per site so if you need it in another site in DW you will have to go back into the preferences and turn it on/off as necessary.
Also depending on what you may have set as default before, go to the preferences -> sites -> enable the prompt on the Get/Put and then the next time you get the prompt make sure you are not getting dependant files before disabling the prompt.
Fortunately, not being totally foolish, we back up all sites regularly. In ten plus years so far I do not recall breaking a site by editing something live that made such a mess that we couldn't restore it within a few minutes and to be fair I could just undo the changes made to the file in DW and save it and it's fixed instantly anyway.
The option to download files and edit them locally, or do it live on the server should be a choice, rather than no choice and since CS3 it clearly has changed.
Your second paragraph suggestion doesn't make a difference I am afraid, but thank you for the suggestion.
