Why is work space background transparent?

Working in CS5.5, When I open my photoshop the main work are in tranparent. I see the menu and tool bar, layers etc. but the desktop shows through and it is very distracking. How do I get a nuetral gray backgroud?

Would try resetting work space by clicking on Window/workspace/reset Essential (or whatevever workspace you use)

You probably want to turn on the application frame. Window>Application Frame if your on a mac.
