Cannot Load Brushes

I have PSE9 it is the only version I own.  I have created several brushes over the past several months and never had a problem.  Today I created a brush and saved it like I normally do but when I went back to that file which I save in the "Special Effect Brushes" I could not open it.  Instead I received a message "Could not load the brushes because the file is not compatiable with this version of Photoshop."  Why on earth would this be happening?
