will avc/h.264 work same as avchd

i have elements 10 and am buying a new camera. so far only sony and panasonic have avchd, does this mean i must buy those cameras or is avc/h.264 the same thing? as in nikon cameras.

    As far as I know, the insides are the same, only the wrapper is different... so you SHOULD be able to use the project preset for the type of camera and then edit

    I have a Canon Vixia which produces AVCHD with an .MTS wrapper... and I have also tested the .MOV files from a Canon DSLR camera with success

    AVCHD is a type of H.264 compression. However, not all H.264 videos are AVCHD -- and not all AVCs are the same. (Although virtually all camcorders adhere to the same AVCHD standard.)

     

    Before I bought a non-camcorder or still camera, I'd try some test footage and see if I'm happy with the results in Premiere Elements.

     

    It SHOULD work, but...

    Go to http://www.photographyblog.com and search for the brand and model you are considering... the reviews there always include links to video tests

     

    Those tests from that site are generally at http://vimeo.com/ where, if you are a FREE member, you may search for the brand/model camera AND then download the "raw" files (if the author has posted the actual source files)

     

    That is how I found various MOV files to test... from an author's source files... not all author's post source files, so do some searching

     

    When you have files on your hard drive, simply use the correct project setting and import and test
