Cannot install Adobe AIR

Apr 17, 2012 1:35 PM

Hello,

Apologies if this is the wrong section, although it seemed the most appropriate. I've noticed some others having similar problems, but I'm creating a separate thread since it seems to be these issues normally require individual troubleshooting.

I've ran into some troubles trying to install the Adobe Muse beta on my laptop - while it installs just fine on my desktop computer, it returns an error message here. Namely, "This program requires a version of Adobe Air that cannot be found. Please install Adobe Air from [...]". I've tried downloading and installing Adobe Air, but the Adobe Air installer greets me with yet another error message:

"An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator."

I've tried numerous things suggested in threads I've seen here, and none of them have worked:

  • Running the installer as an administrator - same issue remains.
  • Using a third-part installer such as Ninite - it freezes during installation.
  • Installing the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility - Adobe AIR is not in the list.
  • Manually removing registry entries - the specific entries did not exist at all.
  • Using the 'Fix it' tool - it doesn't detect any problems.

I'm using a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

I would appriciate any further assistance in this matter - I've tried just about everything I can think of, and nothing seems to work.

Here is the AIR installer log:

Also, some notes after having tried to install this for a day now -

Every time I restart the computer and then try to install AIR, the Adobe AIR installer finish seemingly successfully. However, then running the Muse installer nothing happens at all (I can see its process in the task manager).

Uninstalling AIR from the control panel and then running the Muse installer, it automatically downloads AIR, finishes the installation, but then freezes. Muse appears installed, but trying to run it, it freezes while displaying the splash screen. If I then uninstall Muse and AIR, the standalone AIR installer displays an error message upon installation again, until the next restart.

...I'm really puzzled by this...

I'm sorry you're running into installation issues with AIR.  Microsoft has just released a new utility that can help resolve installation problems.  Would you mind giving this a try and let us know how it works for you?  When running the Fix it, go through the uninstall process and try to remove Adobe AIR from your system.  Once finished, download the latest version of AIR and install again.

Microsoft Install and Uninstall Fix It

If you still encounter problems, we'll need to review the MSI installer log to better diagnose the issue.  Please post back with the log contents.  You can find instructions for finding these logs here:

Sorry for missing that info in your initial post.  I'm not sure what happened there.  I took a look at the MSI logs and you've got something strange going on.  In particular, I believe the failure might be:

MSI (s) (F8:A8) [12:42:24:284]: Product: Adobe AIR -- Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\90A2D107EB418F542933C10EDE00329A\44C2AF74841DCBD4F A069B9143AA8424.  System error 5.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

On my system, this key is at:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer \UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\90A2D107EB418F542933C10EDE00329A

I'm not sure why MSI is substituting "UNKNOWN" for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer \UserData\S-1-5-18\"

Do you have this key present on your system?  If you right click and select Permissions, do you see proper read/write settings available?  Finally, do you run into this same error if you create a new, temporary, administrator account and attempt to install there?
