Can't install Camera RAW 6.3 into Elements 9

Sep 6, 2011 5:44 PM

I have downloaded the installer for 6.3 but when I go to install it, I get this message. "Some updates failed to install."  When it tells me to fix the problems below, all it says is:  installation failed!

I need this update in order to open RAW images from my Canon Powershot S95.

I am working with Elements 9 on both an iMac running OS 10.6.8 and onto a new MacBook Pro.

I have spent an hour reading everything I can and haven't been able to find any place to send this question to Adobe by email.  The phone system for help has more than a half-hour of wait time.

Can someone figure out this problem?

Cherie

What happens if you go to Help>Updates in the editor?

I am having the same problem: trying to install the mac ElementsCameraRaw-6.3-mul-AdobeUpdate.dmg file in order to read my Nikon D-3200 .nef pictures fails to install with the error message "installation failed" and nothing more. There is no indication of why the installation failed.

Help|updates does not find any updates available for Elements 9. The version I have (9.0.3) grays out .nef files when I try to open them within the app, and gives a "does not recognize this type of file" when I use the mac "open with" command on a .nef file.

I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. I am using a Macbook Pro, OS X 10.7.3, Intel core i7 2.2 GHz, 8 GB memory. Thanks.

Is this the regular version or the mac app store version?

It was the retail package shipped Nov 27, 2010, from Amazon.

You can do a manual install then. Go here and download the update:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform =Macintosh

I'd ge the most recent one listed rather than 6.3. Incidentally, is this where you were downloading the version that failed? If not, try installing this one the regular way (the version for full photoshop has a different installer). If that doesn't do it, then double click the dmg file to mount it, double click the mounted file, double click payloads.

Now open ElementsCameraRaw6.1(followed by a long string of numbers). Double click the dmg file in there. Open Assets2, open Universal, and you'll see the actual camera raw.plugin. Drag it to the desktop.

Now go to your hard drive>library>application support>Adobe>Plug-ins>File Formats. You'll see the old camera raw plugin in there. Remove it and put the new one in its place. (In lion it's not so easy to find this library. Probably the easiest way is to go to Finder>preferences>sidebar and turn on Hard Disks. Then click your hard drive on the left side of a finder window and you'll see it.

Thank you. I couldn't find the Mac update section at the Adobe site by

    using the various search options.

    But,

The new download 6.5 installed without trouble. However, the "open with"

command still prompted Elements to respond with an "Unrecognized file type"

error, even though Elements was not listed as the default application.

Trying to open a nef file within Actrobat still showed the nef files grayed

out as unopenable with the application.

I tried to do the manual copying of the camera raw.plugin from the Assets 2

folder as you suggested. H owever it does not appear to be used in the

newer version (6.5). Instead, there is a Profiles directory containing two

    further directories: CameraProfiles and LensProfiles.

The CameraProfiles folder contains a series of further folders for various

camera types, and each folder had a number of .dcp files. I can't find a

"camera  raw.plugin" anywhere within Assets 2.

    So, in sum:

    1) The disk image Elements9CameraRaw-6.5-mul-AdobeUpdate downloaded from

    Adobe installs correctly.

    2) The default program type for .nef files was changed to Elements

    3) Elements will not open a .nef file either from "open with" or within the

application selecting open from the menu.

Hoping you can help me work around this problem.

    Thank you.

Are you sure your camera is supported by these older versions of ACR? What model is it?

It is a Nikon D3200, which Nikon says is the successor to D3100.

What I can't understand, though, is why the .nef files are grayed out when

I try to open them with Elements. Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought that

    .nef  was a Nikon standard.

Oh, you should have said. Every single camera model has its own raw format and all raw converters must be updated to include the info for new camera models. There is no such thing as a "standard" .nef or .cr2 or whatever. No current version of ACR supports the D3200. I presume ACR 7 will when it comes out, but whether or not you will be able to use it with PSE 9 remains to be seen.

ACR7 will NOT be compatible with PSE9.

Waiting for Adobe to update ACR to add support for the D3200, then either upgrading to the current version of PSE available at the time or using the future DNG Converter to convert the RAW files to DNGs that will be compatible with an older Elements/ACR combo are the only ways to get Elements to process RAW images from the D3200.
