How does Proximity Search work

How does proximity search work in BC?

Ok, I know it has to do with Postcode/ZipCode information, but how does it actually determine range/distance between two places (using the ZipCode).

Does BC contain a database of every country's zip codes etc?

I am based in New Zealand and created a Web App with Proximity Search enabled.

So far as per my testing - it seems to work, but the distance searched may not be very accurate.

Any insight into this will be appreciated.

Thanks

    Hey there,

There are lots of online / API Databases to access for this stuff.

I have this implemented on a few sites and we are in New Zealand and it all seems to work very well. Distance stuff is often rounded in terms of area.

Not seen any issues when I have used it.

    Hey Liam

Today I have tried the different kinds of modules in the webapp to make a store-finder on my page.

I can see my 3 items in a list with name, zip and city, and also on a map. So fare so good.
But when trying to set up a searchform for the zip and distance, the search only finds the middle item. Why is that?

    Thanks
    /Shanne

I think it may have something to do with the fact that the addresses are in Denmark and not US, AU etc. Please submit a case with support on this and it should be escalated to level 2. I looked over your web app and the setup looks fine to me.

    Hi Mario

I contacted support, and you're right, it's because the addresses are located in Denmark. So it's like this: I have to contact support every time I need them to add an address to the system. Well, this is bearable, but it all falls to the ground when I want to combine the zip-search with distance, which is not possible, because only the addresses/zipcodes I send to BC, is in the system, and not all zipcodes.

So if anyone else would like to use zip codes and distance in a search form, in a country not known to BC, you can save your self the trouble - it will not work.

    /Shanne
