Need to Detach Template in CS3

May 2, 2012 3:34 PM

Tags: #cs3 #template

I have several pages created from a template that seems to have gone bad.  I am unable to open those

pages in CS3.  I get a message that Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 is not responding.  The pages are pretty

static now, so I can live without the template.  But I can't do any updates if I can't open the pages.

I can access the HTML at the server, so if someone can tell me what to delete, I thought that I could make the changes

there and then download those changed pages to my local PC.  I hope this makes sense.

Appreciate any help you can give me as I am really stuck.

    There will be a starting editable template tag(s) and an ending template tag(s) that will need to be removed (probably more than one, probably many):

    Not sure on CS3, but it will be something like this:

         <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="editableArea" -->

              The editable area in the page

         <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->

    The area between the tags are editable. Remove all instances of these and it should be free from the template.

    ADDED: In CS5, you can select Modify/Templates/Detach from Template which removed the template objects. I don't know if it's the same for CS3, but seems I remember something similar.

    I get a message that Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 is not responding.

    Not sure if this is related to Templates.

    Can you open child pages in Code View but not Design View?

    If yes, try turning off Display External Files from your View menu.

    If this page is live, can you provide a link to it so we can look at it.

    Another alternative is to open the page in notepad (I prefer notepad ++) and remove the template objects. You could then paste it into code view in DW.

    I got a website a little while ago that had templatted pages where the template itself was not uploaded to the server.

    Additionally, the author had used template nesting (very bad) to do the job.

    I was absolutely hosed. Couldn't edit large portions of the pages, couldn't edit non-editable areas, save in BBEdit (which I use lots for workaround stuff and file comparison).

    Here's what I did to solve the problem:

    While you cannot edit non-editable regions in Dreamweaver, you can open a new page and copy code (that is grayed out because it's not editable). If the page isn't opening in Dreamweaver, open it online and look at the source code in your web browser.

    Copy all code, taking out all of the comments that keep you from editing non-editable regions. Make sure your links to style sheets are good.

    That will serve as your master page and I always save them both as a master page and also as a template, defining editable regions as I need them.

    Now, you have a template that works. And it should not take long to reproduce the rest of the pages if they are all based on that template.

    I am not seeing anything in that file that would say it is based on a template. I see no template regions listed, off course that doesn't mean that it is not.

    One thing you should correct is about line 222:

          <p align="center"><div class="columnblock">

    be more like this:

    <div class="columnblock"> remove the p tag

    Jim

    ADDED: If you can open a local copy of that file in a text editor, save it with a different name (so you have a backup) Copy all the text from the text editor then open DW and create a new document, paste the text file into the new document in code veiw and save that file over the problem page (save as with the same file name) and see if that fixes it. I have had a similar problem before and this is the way I fixed it.

    That's not a Template driven page.  There are no editable regions anywhere on that page. Soooo.... you have other problems.

    In looking at your code, I see you have a FaceBook badge.  This is a known problem lately.

    Like I said before, Open Dreamweaver.  Turn off Display External Files from the View menu

    Or, open your problem pages in your favorite plain text editor.  Remove the FB Badge code entirely or comment it out like so:

    <!--this is an HTML comment.-->

    After that, you should be able to work with pages in DW.
