    I do have a basic sili controller card I could install. Would that be better than the onboard. I see one bench mark used onboard with this mobo and got excellent results.Maybe hit and miss? Would just a raid 0 be fine or not? Thanks for info.

    would a 3ware card with 256 cache be fine. i found a few on amazon in my price rang $200 280

    Not really: The Silicon Image RAID controller is nothing more than a typical firmware-assisted software RAID to begin with.

     

    And a 3Ware card with 256MB of cache would still be a waste of $250 or thereabouts, IMHO: Those controllers are of old, outdated designs that can't take full advantage of the newest mechanical HDDs, especially those with 1TB platters (not disks). Good hardware RAID controllers do not cost $250 or even $300 - but cost at least $500 to $600.

    LSI product still no go eh? I thought the 3rd might be good.Coming from the uk. better off with the board for raid for now.

    The one in the third link (the one with 512MB cache) is the one that you want if you cannot afford a better card (however, it is still limiting due to it having only four ports). The other two both have drawbacks: The first one has only a SATA II (3.0 Gbps) card-to-disk interface while the one in the second link has no hardware memory cache.

    The 9260 is a good value (in some cases better at random writes than the 3Ware 9750). However, the version that you picked out is still limited by its four ports. I'd recommend trying to find an eight-port version of the LSI 9260 if you really can't shell out $600 (roughly £410) and up for an Areca card.

    Given the total of four non-System drives, I'm not sure that's really a limitation.  I mean, you probably want to leave at least one drive off the RAID to use as a separate Export drive.

     

    (Personally, I'd leave off another as a separate Project drive, which means adding that fifth so there are three on the RAID might be a good idea.)

    Joe. So your saying running a raid o with 3 drives on raid card and using two regular drives for expor and project drive? Is this correct? Also what would be on the project drive?

    I personally would never recommend a RAID 0.  I'd do what I had to do in order to get RAID 3, or at the very least, RAID 5 (though that is not my preference either).  Either 3 or 5 will require at least three drives.

     

    But yes, a separate Project and Export drive.

    Ah got ya. Sorry. I have never done a raid 5 before so this explains me forgetting that it uses 3 drives as well. I have always done raid 0 with 2 drives in Sony Vegas. They really don't offer much education like we get here from you guys.

     

    Ok so I will lose a lil speed doing raid 5 in the end over a raid 0 but better to have that safety net.

     

    C: os/ progs

    D: E; F:  Raid 5

    G: Export / Cache? Not sure where this goes or pagefile.

    H: Project files?

    I'd put the cache on the Projects drive myself.  Any export is likely to be using that, so you want it on a separate drive.

     

    I also tend to let Windows manage the swap, as I see very little benefit in tweaking it, but potential disaster if you don't tweak it correctly.

    So I would def. see a diff between this or running raid 0 onboard or raid 5 for that matter? Just making sure. My budget is killin me lol.

    This is for dslr footage editing.I haven't even fired up any drives yet till I get this decision final. Just want to get it right.

    DSLR footage will run fine from a single drive.  You won't need a RAID for speed with that footage.  (Though speed never hurts, it isn't really necessary here.)

     

    The caution here is that there is no tape backup, so I personally feel it prudent to go with a RAID level that offers data security.  RAID 3 and 5 offer both security and speed, so you get the best of both.

     

    Having said that, I'd probably go with this card myself, as it does offer the preferred RAID 3. (And it's about the same price once you include the SAS to SATA adaper cable.)

    ok. i installed everything and setup a raid 3. but i don`t see it listed in windows. did i miss something. i see it when it comes up at the start up but does not show up under computer in windows. any help would be great. thank you.

    Have you initialised the array in Disk Management? 

     

    Access this via Control Panel > Computer Management > Disk Management, and follow the wizard instructions.

    I reloaded drivers and I believe I got it now. Now to look for a way to benchmark the speed of it. Is there any test progs that are avaliable for this?

    I just checked read and write speeds with a program called parkdale.

    The 4 drive raid 3 contains 2X 1tbs and 2X 500 gbs.

    The read is 390 and write is 182. Is this good or bad? This was tested with a 250 mb file.

    I am thinkin something is a miss? maybe I should try a raid 0 against this?

    Never heard of Parkdale.  You are wasting drive space using two different sizes

    of disk drives.

    All disk benchmarks have different pro's and con's The most used (but not free) is HD Tune Pro and the disk or array has to unformatted to do the write test.  Atto can do a read and write in use, but does not check the whole disk but just does a spot test.

     

    Did you reload Premiere, you have to redo the mod to the cuda_supported_cards.txt file.

    Thanx Bill for the reply.Yeah I did reload it and it lists the gtx 560ti. I even moved the video card slot to see if any difference. Nothin.Maybe I will try the long method but if it is in the list it should work. It did before I rebuilt this machine.

     

    Bill s there a better setup for the raid?

    Got it. I see this file from Studio 1 productions installs the card name automatically in the middle of the string where as the manual method has you install at the end. The manual way of doing it works great. They must have changed something when they updated this for CS6 2 days ago.

    I will send a note to them about this. : )

     

    Ok Bill. Your not answering my raid question lol. Should I just go back to a simple raid o and backup heavily often?

    I guess I am wondering if those read and writes are decent or should I be seeing a heck of alot more.

    Since my drives are 2x 1tb and 2x500tb I am wasting space like you pointed out Bill. But would this hurt my speed numbers I wonder? Or should I go back to raid o setups. Even though I know no one pushes this.

    This disussion is so long and so many subtopics that I do not have the time to find all your conditions so I chose not to enter that discussion.  You would be better off starting a new discussion with a full current description.of the variables you have.  Many RAID opinions are available.
