is there a way to update symbols across files? I have tried to save a library then import into another document, but when I save new symbol and go into other document it still has the old symbols.
ok. (oh yeah of course because it adds it to the symbol panel as a "new" symbol) but
you can do this,
Modify the symbol, save the library, open another doc with the symbol in, open the saved library, drag an instance of the new symbol click the (to be changed) symbol in the panel and in the panel flyout menu click redefine symbol, this will "update" all the instances. Delete the unneeded symbol on the artboard.
You can create an action to speed this up....
create an object as a separate file. Place that in multiple docs. Update and all instances in all docs will too when link updated.
yikes, would I have to do this for every symbol? not sure how an action would help except per symbol. I am trying to manage a bunch of assets, there could be over 200+
that's the whole reason I have these as symbols, I want them all updated from original Doc to secondary Doc in one fell swoop
You need to kick it old school and simple PLACE an illustrator file into another illustrator file. Voila! Instant updating all around.
BONUS: That same illustrator file will update your InDesign layouts too.
That is what I want to do now.
My plan is to make one big AI file with all my symbols on seperate artboards.
If I place this AI document, cropped to the specific artboard with the required symbol.
Will this load all the other symbols on the other artboards too in some way?
Or is it a real crop where Illustrator does not load the other data or artboards from the linked AI?
So my question in essence, is the artboard cropped before or after the link is placed?
Tnx for the fast reply,
Yes, I use placing all the time.
I know I can choose the artboard and cropping option before placing.
But I am unsure if it loads only the cropped selected artboard or all the artboards.
Even if it provides the option to crop, allthough then they should have called it clip?
Now is there a way to check that only the artboard got sampled from the link?
Just to be sure that if I link 50 artboards/symbols (each artboard containing 1 symbol) from a source AI file that contains 100 artboarts/symbols.So that I don't have 5000 symbols linked through the 50 AI links.
At the moment I don't understand what exactly you're worrying about.
I also don't understand what you're doing there.
Why would you have 5000 symbols in this file when there are only 100 artboards allowed? Makes no sense to me.
On top of that it could be rather unhandy scrolling to 100 artboards when placing that file in order to search for that one particular symbol you want to place.
Sorry for the confusion.
I am unsure if the cropped linked illustrator file is also cropped memory wise.
Memory wise, meaning that only content from the selected artboard gets transfered while non selected artboard gets deleted.
