Problem with .PDF files from .html files at pagebreaks

If there is a better forum to pose this problem, please tell me.  I have tried Dreamweaver without any results.

 

I am using DW CS5.  When I make a .pdf from the .html file it is not handling the images with captions correctly, or even consistently, at the bottom of the .pdf page.

The test page repeats the same image with caption several times.


See at the bottom of page 1 of the .pdf. There is not enough space for Image #3 so it correctly puts it at the top of page 2.  However it then puts the caption for Image #3 in the vertical position as if there were no page break and Image #3 were positioned just below the caption for Image #2.  Here is a screenshot of the bottom of page 1:

It then places image #4 below the caption for Image #3, which results in Image #4 being on top of Image #3.

 

 

 

At the bottom of page 2 there is not space for Image #6 so it puts it at the top of page 3.  It properly places the caption below Image #6 and properly places Image #7.  Here is the bottom of page 2;

At the bottom of page 3 there is not space for all the lines of the caption, so it puts the last line of the caption for Image #8 at the top of page 4.  This is o.k.  Here is the bottom of page 3:

I can live with it breaking up the caption (not ideal) but not with the caption overwriting the image or images overwriting images.

 

Thanks very much for your ideas on how to fix this.

    PDFs from HTML pages are dicey at best.  PDF is a print document.  HTML is a web page that doesn't contain page breaks.  In effect you're asking your PDF converter to infer something from the HTML code that doesn't exist.

     

    My best advice is to create your print documents in Word, InDesign, Illustrator or some other desktop publishing application that is better suited to the task.  Then Save or Print to PDF.

    Thanks, Nancy.  But then would I not have to create it twice?  Once in Dreamweaver for the .htm file and again in Word for the .pdf?  In all I have over 1000 pages, if printed on 8 1/2 x 11.  And the number is probably closer to 2000.  As far as I know I can't go from a Word document to a .htm file without having all kinds of problems.

    Hello Jim,

     

    provided I have understood you correctly: I converted your website http://www.schembs.com/0_PDF_PAGE_PROBLEM.htm with my "Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro" into a pdf file and loaded up to my server. You can see the result (in an acceptable quality, even the links on the images are working) here: http://hansgd.de/AdobTest/PDF%20Paging%20Problem%20with%20Images_Capti ons.pdf (I didn't delete the blanks).

    Hans-Günter, thank you for looking at my problem and replying.  This is interesting.  I agree, your .pdf looks great.  So I did it again with my Acrobat X Pro, V 10.1.3.  Here is the result:

    I get the same result today (4 Mai) as I did on 12 April. 

     

    I am using a Mac.  In Safari I load the .htm file from the website and Print/PDF/Save as PDF.

     

    Any ideas of why we are getting different results?  Vielleicht ist Nancy korrekt.  Could you please tell me the exact steps you took to produce the .pdf.

     

    Regarding your suggestion of trying the deutsch forum, ich spreche nur ein bisschen deutsch.  I wouldn't be able to handle the reply (auf deutsch).

    Hello Jim,

     

    in my IE 8 your website looks great, I don't see any overlaps. To show you what I did, here you can follow and check my proceeding by using my (German) "Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro".

    Hans-Gümter, I have not yet read your latest response.  But I have done additional testing myself.  I found that if I opened the file with Firefox rather than Safari and then saved it as a .pdf the result was somewhere between perfekt and sehr gut.  I also tried opening the .htm file on my hard drive in Acrobat (not getting the browser in the middle) and again the result was much better than using Safari but still not perfekt.  Will look at your response above.

     

    But I think Nancy is korrekt.  You can't predict the results when you make a .pdf from a .htm.  But it does look like Firefox and IE may produce better results than Safari. 

     

    The Fratzenstein is, I believe, in Undenheim, southwest of Mainz, northwest von Worms.  Mein Cousin hat es gefunden.

    do you want to preserve the pattern of your "Fratzenstein's" one under the other, what means you have to scroll (here) from image 1 to 11. Contrary hereto I became convinced, your  should better use a slideshow. There are many interesting offers, I for my part, I use very often this here:

    A nice solution I found when using the hiqpdf html to pdf library in one of my projects and it involves adding the page-break-inside  avoid on the image/caption group.

    Hans, thanks for the lead.  But it is just a personal project for me, no revenue, and I don't want to invest $400 to solve this single problem.

    we never talked about "When I make a .pdf from the .html file it is not handling ..." Is it really necessary to do that?

     

    If I understand right your matter, so you must have all the "Exponate aus dem Ortsmuseum" images, because the are in your html file, right? In this case ist's really no problem to insert these images (in two sizes) in a lightbox slideshow.

    Hans-Günther, thanks for your persistence.

     

    Here is my objective.  I have a viele größe Familiegeschichte Webseite.  Some of the individual chapters (pages), if printed out, would be 50 pages. 

     

    I would like to offer visitors (only family members) the opportunity to print out a chapter.  To do this I think the best opportunity is to have the chapters also as .pdf files and print the pdf.

     

    I have many (probably over 1000, perhaps 2-3000) Fotos with captions in the various pages, with wordwrap around them.  At present, when I make a .pdf from an .html page the fotos, captions and wordwrap are often problems.  Because of the size of the website, I can't go in and hand tweak every picture.

     

    What I would like would be, if a Foto will not fit on the remainder of a .pdf page (with its caption), then the entire Foto with caption goes to the next page.  I am more willing to have the wordwrap not be quite right as long as the Fotos and captions are o.k.

     

    Any thoughts?

    "thanks for your persistence" we germans have to help each other too!

     

    The first would be that you make this site accessible only to family members. But this problem you have already solved (see here: Entry is available only with a username and password> Click here to enter the WORLD SITE.).

     

    The second - I dare not to say this-is use browser's print possibilities (I can give you an overview of the processuse only by using the images from your website.).

    ... and for some single images, your relatives can use reightclick. In this case (protected website) should it be no problem for you. (You remember our thread about protected images?)
