Changing the DocumentID in Acrobat PDF's

I have an issue where I'm migrating a customers assets to a new Digital Asset Management System, all the assets are PDF's.  The problem is that a large majority of assets have the same DocumentID even though the files are named different and belong to different groups.  What I suspect is the customer created a duplicate of one document and then just renamed it which retained the DocumentID but changed the InstanceID.

What I would like to know is if the DocumentID can be changed?

If so, how would I go about it?

It can be changed, you just have to determine what to change it to and it should conform to what's described in the PDF specification (ISO-3200). You might be able to edit the file directly if you don't change the number of bytes and there are no digital signatures, security, etc. involved, but it would be better to set the docID property via JavaScript: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_A croJS.88.388.html
