Click Boxes

May 4, 2012 10:56 AM

Hi. I'm hoping to find out if it's possible to have 5 click boxes on a slide in Captivate 5.5 that must be clicked in a specified order before the slide will advance. I'm trying to simulate entering a password, which requires 5 clicks in a specific order before the screen advances. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

    Hi Kim,

This will be possible with variables and advanced actions. But you'll have to give me more details:

    • Do you have only those 5 click boxes on the slide, or are there also click boxes that are not 'correct'?
    • When do you want to check the sequence: after all CB's have been clicked or
    • after each click?
    • What has to appear after the check: a message, or what? Both in Success and in Failure situation?
    • Do you want to offer the possibility to 'Retake' the clicking exercise?

    Kim,

Almost midnight over here. Will try to work out an example tomorrow if you can be patient that long,

    Hello,

I'm busy working out an example and will explain on my blog post:

    • created 5 click boxes on top of images
    • after each click that click box is disabled
    • when all click boxes have been clicked, a button 'Check' will be used for checking the sequence
    • if the sequence is OK, the Next button and a Success caption appears
    • if the sequence is not OK, another Caption appears that asks the user to try again, and all click boxes are enabled again

It will be also possible, the way I created variables and actions to check before the sequence is complete, but it is not clear to me what you want in that case: telling them that all is OK until then or something is wrong and allowing to start right again? Please let me know and I'll try to provide that scenario as well.

PS Here is the link to the blog post, with a detailed explanation and an example SWF:

    Kim,

I expected your second question. It will be possible but not as easy as it sounds, and I will certainly add this in the same blog post. May I ask a favour? Could you ask this question in a comment on my blog post? Why it is not that easy: you need an event for all advanced actions, and I didn't want to use the external Eventhandler widget (which I appreciate a lot) in this example that I will also try to explain partially in my webinar for Adobe today. It cannot 'fade out' or simply disappear (easier) after it has been displayed without some tweaking. The easiest way would be by having it disappear with the next click, or to add a Reset button on that First slide as well. Fading out will have to be done by Apply Effect in the advanced action or (seems more complicated) using a complicated timeline and micro-navigation. Applying an effect by advanced actions is up till now very tricky, because you lose a lot of control on those effects. Will see what I can propose as the most simple workaround.

Was surprised by the first question (seems so basic). May I point to two old articles about variables?

Use the power of variables without advanced actions

Unleash the power of variables with advanced actions

Short: create a text caption, go in edit mode and in the Properties panel, Format accordion you find a X button next to the symbol button that allows you to insert a system or a user variable. You can also type in the user variable between $$ but I prefer (to avoid typos) the first method.
