Not sure about iMovie, but I create a lot of my music in Adobe Audition, and then Save_As WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and those Import into my NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs perfectly.
I would not use MP3, as it will heavily compress the audio, loosing much quality.
