Merge Scatter Brush Shapes?

Is there a way to merge scatter brush shapes?

I turned a leaf shape into a scatter brush with the intentions of making a tree-like silhouette. After drawing my paths and getting the desired randomized leaf effect, I couldn't find a way to merge any of the leaves :/

How would I go about doing this and is it possible?

-Illustrator CS 5.1-

You first have to Expand Appearance. Then you get Editable vector leaves which you can then merge (in case the basic brush shapes are suitable for doing so)
