I am unable to resize an image after placed it in Illustrator 5.1 and I noticed the 45 degree lines (Cross lines) are not showing after I clicked on the image.  What am I doing wrong? Is there a setting for it?  Please help.  Thanks.

Are you looking for your bounding box?  (command-shift-B or View -> Show Bounding Box)

The "cross lines" indicate that the image is linked. If yours doesn't show cross lines when selected it must be embedded.

When placing images be sure that Shift or Caps Lock are not down.

However this has nothing to do with not being able to scale the image. Is it maybe on a locked layer or something like that?

    Can you select it properly?

The OP might have both Hide Edges and Hide Bounding Box which is why the do not see the X for a linked image, if in fact it is linkled.

As Jesseham wrote for the Mac Command>Shift>B or for the PC Control> Shift>B then for the Mac Command>H and for the PC Control>H

Or View> Show Boundng Box and then View>Show Edges
