"cannot open x.idd" in InDesign CS5.5 7.5 (Win7)

May 8, 2012 5:18 AM

Hello,

I found some topics on this issue but didn't feel that they specific enough. I was working on an .idd file last night and saved it before going to bed. Now I get "Cannot open ..." when I try to open it. I can open any other idd file on my computer. I've tried changing the name to no avail. I don't have Indesign on another computer so I haven't tried that.

What riles me is that I can see the first two pages in the Bridge preview but I can't open it anywhere. Anyway, I'm linking the file through Dropbox, if anyone can help me open this I'd be eternally grateful!

Looks like a corrupt file to me.

    Jongware should look at this...

It looks to me like the file is damaged -- I think the header information is being repeated, but I'm not certain.

Depending on how much work it would be to start over, and whether Jongware has any thoughts, you should consider the Markzware recovery service. Bad InDesign or Quark File Recovery Submission Form

I just tried something else, and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try to open the file as a copy (clcik the open as a copy radio button in the open dialog).

Are you trying to save your files across a network, or to a removeable drive? Networks, particularly those at schools (I know this from experience) can have reliability issues. The open as a copy trick has worked for me in the past, and it worked on your file here. Writing to removeable media, like a flash drive, is even less reliable, so it a good habit to copy your work from the flash drive to the local machine, edit and save, then copy back to the flash drive.

mmmmno, Peter, the double header is actually a part of the Safe Saving method of InDesign (it only updates one of these at a time, so if this fails it can revert to the other one).

My own inspection tool reports *no* errors or warnings (not that I'd personally vouch for its accuracy--but still...if it *did* report one, I'd be sure). Also no particilarly strange fonts (Minion Pro, Myriad Pro, Adobe Garamond Pro, Calibri, Helvetica Medium). Only probably that last one could be the source of your problems -- try de-installing all of your Helveticas and attempt to re-open.

"blah.pdf" is an external link; try moving this out of InDesign's sight before re-opening, just in case there is something bad in there as well.

I see some weird 'spread transform' values. Is that normal for CS5.5, or did you move some pages around to make custom spreads?

(And a couple of original Word RGB imported colors; one in your style "Body 1"! Now that's a no-no as well, for technical reasons this time.)

... Bottom line is, there is nothing I can see that could be a definitive cause of this crashing ...

What I *do* see is that this particular document crashed 3 times and was recovered 3 times, apparently without a proper "save" inbetween. That won't have helped either.

Gosh, to think you could've been payed £100 just to do that!

By the way, if you are able to get the file to open, I would export to .idml, then open that and save with a new name and continue from there. See Remove minor corruption by exporting
