I have Photoshop CS5 for Windows (version 12.1 x32), and I'm trying to open a CS6 file that was sent to me. When I do, none of the text layers are editable. Is this expected? Is there any way to fix it?
Actually, I think there's a bug in Photoshop CS6 that causes corrupt PSD files to be written. I don't think the text layers would be editable in Photoshop CS6 either, unfortunately.

You may have to recreate the layers you want to edit.

Ah, I see. That's probably a good thing in a way, but...
What you describe does seem to describe a compatibility issue between the two. Perhaps you'll have to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 in order to deal with such files. I don't know of any way to convert such a file, although you might see if they can write a PDF file for you instead of PSD.
Photoshop CS6 has only been released for one day, and already designers are sending you Photoshop CS6 PSD files?

Was it really only yesterday? That's interesting because some of these files were produced on May 1.
Also interesting is that if I open File Info on these files, and go to the Description tab, the "Application:" field is blank, whereas in files I produced myself, it says "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Windows."
