How to generate a more accomplished (professional) table of contents?

May 8, 2012 1:46 PM

In the desired option one option to align the numbers is to insert a tab after each return as the first generated version does not align them. How to avoid those aditional steps?

(Indesign lets control the elements between the number and the item, no more...)

I dont think there is a automatic way of doing it , you have to set the tab manually ,but I have a question why to define the tab in front of each entry of the page number?

The page number with 2 digits will be automatically aligned the concern would single digit page number Ex:- 9 ,

Select all the single digit page number

Go to Type-->Tabs , and define the Indent tab for just these page number ,

it would be easier as all the entry will be aligned in one go.

Let me explain what I mean :-

This is the TOC similar to yours First generated TOC in Post#1

    TOC1.png

Now rather then inserting tab infront of every line , I selected all the content which has the Single digit page number Ex:-9 , and then use the Tabs , From Type-->Tabs

    TOC 2.png

So generate the normal TOC and then make the changes in the TOC using the Tabs panel , after selecting the text,

Indesign create the TOC as shown in the Screen shot #1 , with tab between number and item

Then I manually adjusted the entry by the Tab panel , as shown in the Second screen shot , the difference is only that the in your workflow you have to manually entered tab infornt of all number , In mine you just need to select the text and then use the tab panel , its just easy way of doing it.

What Manish is doing is adding a first-line indent to selected paragraphs. I don't think this is any more user-friendly or faster than adding the tab in front.

It won't do any good for your current situation, but you probably should file a feature request to improve TOC this way. Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form

It isn't really a bug, it's a design limitiation, and it won't get changed if reported as a bug. Asking for a Feature modification, on the other hand, might get you someplace.

First off, I don't see the numbers colliding with the listing, even when I haven't defined a tab stop in the style applied to TOC listings, and second, the proper way to do this IS to define the tab stop where you want it. Perhaps you've set only one stop and it's either too far to the left or it was defined as something other than a left-aligned tab. This is user error, not a bug.

What I was describing as a design limitation was the inability to set the page numbers as right-aligned, which was your original complaint.
