I dont think there is a automatic way of doing it , you have to set the tab manually ,but I have a question why to define the tab in front of each entry of the page number?
The page number with 2 digits will be automatically aligned the concern would single digit page number Ex:- 9 ,
Select all the single digit page number
Go to Type-->Tabs , and define the Indent tab for just these page number ,
it would be easier as all the entry will be aligned in one go.
Have you experienced this problem with a real TOC?
The problem here is also right align the numbers: 9 must be aligned with 8, for example.
This can't be done when the tab is after the number.
At least you need two kind of tabs, one right-align for the numbers and another left-align for the items
Indesign does not insert tabs between number and entry.
Indesign lets you introduce a tab between entry and number
It seems a flaw.
The example above is not exactly the real thing (it was fixed by myself to put it more clear as long ago I am introducing the tabs with grep or find/change ^p with ^p^t)
Below you may see the generated table of contents when insert a tab:
Let me explain what I mean :-
This is the TOC similar to yours First generated TOC in Post#1
Now rather then inserting tab infront of every line , I selected all the content which has the Single digit page number Ex:-9 , and then use the Tabs , From Type-->Tabs
So generate the normal TOC and then make the changes in the TOC using the Tabs panel , after selecting the text,
Your system of manually fixing a single digit is not convenient at all...
Usually you have in a table of contents page numbers with 1, 2 and 3 ciphers and with this method you have to repair manually also two ciphers page numbers...
It seems Indesign does not generate this tabbed TOC you showed here when you try to insert a tab between number and item: that is the point of this thread.
In your example did you get straight the tabs or you inserted them manually? I am sure Indesign mixes numbers and letters as showed above.
Indesign create the TOC as shown in the Screen shot #1 , with tab between number and item
Then I manually adjusted the entry by the Tab panel , as shown in the Second screen shot , the difference is only that the in your workflow you have to manually entered tab infornt of all number , In mine you just need to select the text and then use the tab panel , its just easy way of doing it.
What Manish is doing is adding a first-line indent to selected paragraphs. I don't think this is any more user-friendly or faster than adding the tab in front.
It won't do any good for your current situation, but you probably should file a feature request to improve TOC this way. Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form
First off, I don't see the numbers colliding with the listing, even when I haven't defined a tab stop in the style applied to TOC listings, and second, the proper way to do this IS to define the tab stop where you want it. Perhaps you've set only one stop and it's either too far to the left or it was defined as something other than a left-aligned tab. This is user error, not a bug.
What I was describing as a design limitation was the inability to set the page numbers as right-aligned, which was your original complaint.

Yes, I was ignoring this aditional setting and it is (my) user error. ![]()

I will post this very precise point in the requested features.
Thanks a lot for your super help.![]()
