Publishing to Android

Nov 1, 2011 10:17 AM

Hi!

I have published my magazine on iPad. Now i want to use the same layout on android also.

I know, there will be black ribbons on screen because screen ratios do not match.

I want to ask, do i really need to use separate publication Adobe ID for android?

Or I can use same ID on iPad and on android?

If you want the same folios that show up in the iPad app to show up in your Android app, use the same Adobe ID for the iPad and Android.

If you don't want the black bars to appear (and if you want better performance), you can create folio renditions.

With free folios, yes. With paid folios, no, at least not unless you have a custom entitlement server set up (Enterprise only). You can charge content for the same retail folios through different stores, but the stores aren't aware of purchases made through other stores. In other words, if your customer purchases your folio on the iPad, they aren't entitled to download the same folio on the Xoom. They would have to pay Google (or Amazon).

You don't need to use different IDs for the different apps on different platforms. You can use the same ID to make the same folios available on each platform. If you don't create renditions, the viewer will scale and letterbox your content, and some features (panoramas, inline videos, PDF articles) aren't supported on android. But, yes, use the same adobe ID.

    Bob:

Is there a quick reference guide for the features that don't currently work on the Android platform. We're looking into expanding our market, but need a solid awareness of the limitations of the Android platform.

This discussion ALMOST answers my question, but not directly -

Do I need separate Adobe IDs for the different Renditions (iPad & Android) of an app?

(I AM creating separate files for each rendition)

    Many Thanks!

It's not clear to me what you're trying to do. If you use different Adobe IDs, you're not using renditions. You have two different apps with two different sets of folios. If you use the same Adobe ID for both apps, any free folio you publish for the iPad will appear on the Android device.

I think what he's reffering to is a case in which you publish a different rendition for each tablet platform.

Like for example a 1024x768 for the iPad and a 1280x800 rendition for the Android, or 1024x768 PDF rendition for the iPad and 1024x768 PNG/GPG rendition for the Android.

I think that Adi is close —

I have an app called "Wedding Planner."

I'm creating a rendition for the iPad at 1024x768, and a rendition for the Anroids at 1232x752.

My question comes down to this:

In the DPS Account Administration panel of the Digital Publishing Suite Dashboard should I see -

    a) ONE Account ID (weddingplanner@mycompany.com) that is used by both reditions

    b) TWO Account IDs (weddingplanner-ipad@mycompany.com AND weddingplanner-android@mycompany.com), one for each rendition.

Thanks for your help guys - as they say "the devil is in the details"

You can take either approach. If you don't want your 1024x768 folios to show up on Android -- for example, if you're using PDF articles or panoramas -- you might want to keep the apps separate. My DPS Tips app uses the same Application ID for all platforms, and that can be a problem. If you download DPS Tips on an Android device, you'll see that I had to create a dummy folio rendition for the "Single Edition" issue, which is about an issue not supported on Android. A case could be made that I should have used different Application IDs for both apps. It just depends on your circumstances.

By the way, you probably also want to create an Android rendition at 1024x600 to cover the Large size devices and the Kindle Fire.
